Links are showing up in my website. Why?

  • Unknown's avatar

Everytime I go into my site or create a new blog, hyperlinks pop up in words that have nothing to do with what I am promoting. I want them to go away. Can you tell me why they are there and can they be controlled?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

Could you take a screenshot of where you’re seeing these links and upload it to your Media Library so I can take a look? Screenshot instructions can be found here:

    Take a Screenshot

I just took a look at your content, and here is how it’s appearing on my side:

It looks like all of those links I see are intentionally entered.

I am trying to use the snippit program because I don’t have the images you are asking for. I saved something in a file in my computer. Not sure how to get it to you. I saw your screen and yours is clean. Maybe mine is infected because I am getting all kinds of advertisments every time I open up a website. Its the annoying ad types, like I may have downloaded something. I keep my system clean.

My screen is putting in hyperlinks that look like coupons in selected words and they appear on my site and anyplace else I go. I do not put these in. I put in only what I want and these links appear on their own. I get windows that pop in when I open a website on my and others.

    Hi!

It does appear like these are malware ads. In regards to sending the photo, you can just upload it to your Media Library here like you would a photo that you want to include in a blog post:

I’ll be able to take a peak.

Regarding removing the malware, can you try downloading and installing Google Chrome first to see if you experience the same issue there? You can find that here:

    https://www.google.com/chrome/

For removing the malware, there are several options out there. If you have an anti-virus software like Norton installed, you may be able to have that software remove the malware for you.

If not, you could also look at using a software like Avast:

I uploaded the snapshot snippit as you instructed. I don’t know how you are suppose to get it, but I’m sure you know.

I had a nightmare time with Google Chrome when I cancelled one gmail account and created a new one for rebranding purposes. Google would not sync correctly with all my social media accounts, it kept bringing in my old login info. My smartphone rep. suggested Mozilla Firefox and all the problems with Google went away. Go figure.

I do think something is going on with Mozilla. I just opted out of 101 advertisers that had attached to my blog. How did they get there? I don’t know. I did Norton’s scan. I’m still seeing ad videos and live links in some of my content that I didn’t put there and pop up windows. Norton has a super program that might do the job but it could remove software that I want or need, so have to be careful with that.

I have internet explorer but had problems with them over the years and stopped using them. I’m on the internet all the time so I need reliable connections.

I’m not sure about the upload as I didn’t see anything. Is it suppose to sit in that square space? If so I will have to try it again.

I’m looking at your upload here:

    https://shirleyslaughterblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php?item=611

Currently, I don’t see any links or videos in that site so I’m unable to see exactly what you’re referring to. If you could upload a link or video that you didn’t embed, that would be awesome!

Regarding the browser, Chrome was just a suggestion. I definitely want you to stick with something you’re comfortable with. However, this seems like a local issue (an issue with your browser/computer) rather than one with WordPress.com overall so I’m limited in how much I can help directly. Opting out of the advertisers sounds like a good step though. Did that decrease the number of advertisers on your site when you view it?

I was beginning to agree with you, that this is a local problem. Opting out didn’t help at all what was going on.

I finally found the culprit hiding in a pop up ad. It was a malware and somehow it attached itself to my Mozilla Firefox browser. But its gone now and won’t bring back those nuisance popup videos and hyperlinks and ads that were invading my blog. And I had this problem for a couple of weeks before realizing I had a problem.

How did I find it? One ad too many popped up so I took a look at it and found the company name (Crushup… I think-didn’t write it down). I clicked into how to uninstall and went to the Mozilla Firefox instructions. It wasn’t exactly set up the way they said so I had to use a little more ingenuity to find the steps. Then I was able to remove the culprit which was hidden. I also had to make sure my Norton’s was enabled and then I got out of there and re-started my computer for good measure.

    GONE!!

At least coming to you helped me to find out that I definitely did have a problem. Thanks Jeremey for your help.
