Links as Comments

Lately, some commenters have given links to commercial websites as their names, so clicking on a comment sends you to their site rather than to their comment. Is that a form of Splogging?

People can enter any URL they wish when they fill in their information and make a comment. I personally know several people who change the URL they use depending on whether they are commenting on a site where they would like to point people to their business website, and then they use their blog URL when they want to point people to their blog. In other words, which URL they use depends on what they are commenting on and which of their sites (blogs, etc) are on topic.

It’s a form of spamming sometimes, but splogging is a specific form of intellectual property theft and not really the same thing.

Clicking on the name is supposed to send you to their site, whatever that may be, but some people just put Google in, particularly unsophisticated people. Clicking on the post title in the Recent Comments widget will take you to the comment; clicking on the name will send you to their site.
