Links do not work

  • Unknown's avatar

    I prepared two posts today for future publication (Sand Creek, on my English and German sites), but in neither one was I able to include any links. The link button does not appear to be functioning.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

    I was able to verify on my primary site that the “Insert/edit Link” button in the toolbar of a post editor is still working perfectly.

    I find a link in the content of each post that I’ve checked on the front page of https://tanjabrittonwriter.wordpress.com, the most recent post being Horsing Around, published on 2 November. If you’ve encountered the issue since then, then I suspect that it might be a local browser issue. If so, then the Browser Issues support page might be helpful.

    Thank you, musicdoc1. I have had no problem with the links up until now. Yesterday I wrote and saved a new post, to be posted at a future date. In that particular post I am unable to activate the link button at all. I have not changed anything, am trying to do it the way I always have, but I will check out the Browser Issues.
    I appreciate the help.
    Tanja

    I followed the instructions about Browser Issues and deleted all stored cookies, etc. I was able to attach a link to the end of my written post, but not embed another one in the middle of the text. Before, when I used to click on the “Link” button on the toolbar, a box opened, and I could actually seen the URL of the link I inserted. Now, no box opens when I click on the link button.

    I can add links using the My Sites/Calypso dashboard. However in the WP Admin dashboard in Visual mode the “insert/edit link” button doesn’t do anything (although oddly the “remove link” button works). I can easily add a link using Text mode however.
    PS: the keyboard shortcuts, special characters and alignment buttons don’t appear to be working for me today in the WP Admin Visual mode post editor either. If I too am experiencing a browser issue it is odd that Text mode works yet Visual mode doesn’t. In the past it was always the Calypso dashboard that my browser took exception to.

    @tanjabrittonwriter, @themagicrobot,

    I haven’t been able to replicate the issues described. On a test site with the Motif theme applied, in both the Calypso and WP Admin editors, I was able to use the “Insert/edit link” button in a post or page editor toolbar to create a text link in visual mode. The “Insert/edit link” button worked perfectly in both draft and published posts and pages, and the links created displayed both in the post or page editor window and on the visible post or page (preview for drafts).

    @tanjabrittonwriter,

    Now, no box opens when I click on the link button.

    What is the device/browser or app combination that you’ve been using during these attempts? Have you tried switching to another device, if one is available to you?

    Earlier today I was using a work PC with IE11 and Windows 7. Much of the WP Admin Visual toolbar was inactive even though it had been working just fine on the same machine two days before. Later in the day using different equipment with Edge and Windows 10 and all buttons are clickable. I assume it’s down to differences between versions of JavaScript.

    I have changed nothing. I have always used my laptop with Internet Explorer, never anything else. One day the “insert link” button works, the next it does not. I don’t have a second device I could try this from.
    Thank you for trying to help me figure this out!

    @tanjabrittonwriter

    Which version of IE are you using? Make sure you are running an up to date browser version found at http://browsehappy.com

    If you are not successful please post this specific info here:
    (a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://supportdetails.com/

    I am using IE version 10, but have been using this all along, and it has not been a problem. I did not like some versions of version 11, so uninstalled it.
    Will I need to upgrade? Did WordPress change its requirements overnight?

  • Unknown's avatar

    It’s outdated browser version and both IE11 and Edge are better choices. You can view browser use stats here https://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_explorer.asp Less than .2 % of people are using browsers that are older. I suggest the you upgrade to IE 11 or use Edge.

    Editing to insert missing word above referring to IE10: It’s an outdated browser version …

    Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) is the last version of the Internet Explorer web browser by Microsoft. It was officially released on 17 October 2013 for Windows 8.1 and on 7 November 2013 for Windows 7.

    It’s now 2017 and fast approaching 2018.

  • Hi folks,

    @tanjabrittonwriter we do update things frequently.

    Can you confirm whether you’re using wordpress.com/post or wp-admin’s editor?

    Also, just as a side note, you should be able to highlight a word then paste a URL to create a link in either editor’s visual mode. The link button should still work, and I’m happy to troubleshoot that with you, but the other method may be faster for you.

  • @themagicrobot thanks for that – does a hard refresh help at all?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am using the wordpress.com/post editor. I actually tried it with the “improved editor”, but I could not insert the link either. I must be doing something wrong. I tried to highlight a word and paste a URL, but it does not work, at least not within the body of the post. It worked at the end of a post, though. But a box used to open when I highlighted a word and pushed the “insert link” button.

  • Thanks @tanjabrittonwriter, the “improved editor” should be the one at https://wordpress.com/posts – the other is here:
    https://tanjabrittonwriter.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

    Could you check to see whether you have the same problem in both editors? Also can you confirm you’re using the Visual tab in both editors?

    Lastly, could you get a screenshot and upload it to wordpress.com/media ?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Screenshots can be very helpful. You can use http://snag.gy/ or http://cloudup.com to share screenshots and link to them here. If you use the WordPress.com guide for screenshots http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ you can and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

    I have been using not the “improved editor”, but the other editor, which I find more user-friendly. On this latter editor, I am still not able to insert a link by underlining a word. On the “improved editor” I was able to today, for the first time, even though I had tried it unsuccessfully before. But I don’t really want to switch to that editor, I find it more difficult to use, and I did not see a function where I can schedule a post for a future date. Also, after I was able to insert the link in the “improved editor” and I saved the changes, when I viewed my post in the other editor, the link was not active! This is using the Visual tab in both editors.
    Sorry, but try as I might, I can not capture a screenshot.
    Thanks to all of you for your help/suggestions. I am not tech-savvy at all, and am very frustrated.
