Links do not work

  • Unknown's avatar

    @tanjabrittonwriter,

    am still not able to insert a link by underlining a word.

    What do you mean by “underlining” a word. You can’t create a link by underlining a word, regardless of which editor you use. On the Motif theme, text links are underscored (and colored red, by default, though the color may be changed), but you don’t underline the text to create a link.

    Up until last week, the way I embedded a link into my post was by underlining a name or a word, then clicking on the “insert link” tab which would open a box, then I would paste the URL of my link into the box, and the underlined word would change color, thereby indicating that it was linked to a different URL.

    Re: “On the Motif theme, text links are underscored…”

    That is, when you point at or run the cursor over the link.

    Thanks. By “underlining” you mean “highlighting.” I thought that you might have meant that, and should have asked you.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes, I apologize, I meant highlight!

    @tanjabrittonwriter,

    No worries. :)
    I think perhaps I’ll leave the walk-through on the steps of making and sharing a screenshot to @supernovia or another staff member. The fact that the “Insert/edit link” button isn’t working is most likely a browser issue, and may be resolved by simply updating the browser or changing to another browser as suggested by @timethief above.

    Thank you for all your time and suggestions, musicdoc1!

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’re welcome!

  • I took a day off and it looks like you’re all resolved here. Thank you, @musicdoc1 :)

    All set, @tanjabrittonwriter?

  • Unknown's avatar

    No, not resolved!
    As described above, I was able to insert a link in the “improved editor”, but even after I saved my post, the link did not show up in the editor I use. You will, no doubt, suggest I use the “improved editor”, and if that’s my only recourse, I will have to, but I don’t like it as much as the other one. Also, I could not find a way in the “improved editor” to schedule a post for a future release date. Maybe I am overlooking something?!
    What still puzzles me is how, from one day to the next, one function (insert link) I have used without problem for over one year stops working, when everything else still does. It makes no sense to me.
    Thanks timethief and supernovia, for your support. I know I must sound imcompetent, but I am usually able to follow instructions.

    In the “new improved” “My Sites” dashboard when you are in the post editor click “Post Settings” “Status” and the arrow next to “Publish immediately” which then gives you the option to schedule when the post will be published.

    PS: concerning your adding a link problem in the WP Admin dashboard have you checked if the issue is definitely there in both the Visual and Text options. A few days ago I found it worked for me in Text but not in Visual. I haven’t had a chance since to check if that is still the case for me.

  • @tanjabrittonwriter did you get a chance to confirm yet whether this is happening in another non-Microsoft browser, such as Chrome or Firefox? That would give us a clearer path for troubleshooting.

    @supernovia,

    I took a day off and it looks like you’re all resolved here.

    Definitely not resolved. The only thing settled yesterday was the difference between the terms “underlined” and “highlighted.” The browser issue evidently hasn’t been addressed by @tanjabrittonwriter. She also needs instructions on making and sharing screenshots, having evidently encountered trouble in implementing the instructions in the support page suggested by @timethief on page 1 here.

  • Got it.

    We have a how-to on screenshots here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

    These can be uploaded at wordpress.com/media – just update here when that’s done.

    I think she’s read that support page. @timethief provided that link, as well links to a couple of screenshot sharing services, after which @tanjabrittonwriter said:

    Sorry, but try as I might, I can not capture a screenshot.

    Using IE 11 again today what I said a few days ago still remains the case:

    I can add links using the My Sites/Calypso dashboard. However in the WP Admin dashboard in Visual mode the “insert/edit link” button doesn’t do anything (although oddly the “remove link” button works). I can easily add a link using Text mode however.
    PS: the keyboard shortcuts, special characters and alignment buttons don’t appear to be working for me today in the WP Admin Visual mode post editor either.

    Thanks to everybody for trying to help me figure this out.

    I don’t have Chrome or Firefox, but today I was able to insert a link in the WP Admin dashboard Text Mode, and this is something that my limited technical understanding allows me to do, so I will use it in the future.

    Still don’t know why it’s not possible in the Visual Mode which is how I had been doing it all along, because everything else is working as before. To my simple mind, if it were a Browser issue, other functions would be affected.

    Thank you again, musicdoc1, timethief, themagicrobot, and supernovia!

    Best,
    Tanja

  • @musicdoc1 oof. Sorry I keep missing things in this thread.

    Since @themagicrobot is able to consistently duplicate this in IE11 (which I don’t have access to currently) I’ll ask some other folks here to test this and file a report. We’ll update here if we need more information.

    @tanjabrittonwriter the insert link option was updated some time ago in WordPress. It’s possible a ‘bug fix’ or enhancement introduced a new bug that only appears in some browsers.
