Links do not work

  • @themagicrobot

the keyboard shortcuts, special characters and alignment buttons don’t appear to be working for me today in the WP Admin Visual mode post editor either.

Can you get a screenshot of this to be sure you and the folks troubleshooting here are seeing the same thing?

@supernovia Where I am now I’ve only got a laptop with access to Edge and Chrome, where as we know, everything is hunky-dory. I’ll call by my place of work in the morning and upload some screenshots into my Media library to show what’s happening/not happening for me using IE11. I thought it was really odd that I could delete links but not add them in the WP Admin visual editor.

@supernovia Although the majority of buttons work in the WP Admin visual post editor there are still the same few that remain unresponsive. I have now added a few screenshots to my Media Library but I doubt they will be of much help. I really ought to learn how to make a video of the desktop as that would make things much clearer. As I haven’t posted much to my site recently I can’t give a precise date when things stopped working (all the buttons worked in September……). Could the most recent IE11 11.0.47 update have upset anything?

  • @themagicrobot thanks for that — that is helpful. We were able to get one person having an issue with IE11 but not this issue. We’ll keep trying.

I don’t have any access to to IE at all right now (I used to have IEVMs but not anymore) so I’m working with my colleagues on this.

@supernovia I really didn’t think this problem with IE11 would still be on-going. I was sure that when I got around to refreshing everything that could be refreshed the functionality would be restored. Yes, I can use Text mode or Chrome but I love a good mystery and wonder if tanjabrittonwriter’s original issues that began this thread ever resolved themselves. I did notice just one other thread with similar problems here:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/problems-with-toolbar-when-editing-posts-via-wp-admin-dashboard?replies=2
I wonder if clearing cache etc etc worked in that case? I tried all those ideas last week to no avail. Today I refreshed Java 8 to the latest update 151. That made no difference either to the four (now actually five I’m afraid to report) non-functioning (for me) buttons in the WP Admin visual post editor using IE11. I’ve only discovered today that although clicking on the “Text colour” button brings up a box with all the different colours, clicking on any colour makes no change to the black text. Do you think we should close this thread and put it down to “gremlins” within my desktop?

  • We might do that soon. I did ask a teammate who has IE access to take a look when they’re online tomorrow.

I had the same problem with the link button not working. It drove me crazy because one day it did and the next it didn’t. So with a WordPress experts (Darcie) help, I discovered about finding out about browsers. I was using Explorer and yes I had the latest version. It still didn’t work. Used my other computer and still no luck. So I decided to swap browsers and went to Chrome. I have both search engines on this and the other computer. I am using Windows 10 on both. The good news is that using Chrome, I can now do links. I would like to know why this happened however as I don’t wish for another week of frustration.

@kayfaulkner Hooray! Many thanks for coming forward and confirming that I’m not going mad!?! Yes everything WordPress.com-related works fine for me using any Browser currently available apart from the visual editor when using M*icr*s*ft Internet Explorer 11.

  • Aye, things should work well in all of these browsers so far as they are standards-compliant:
    https://browsehappy.com/

If something isn’t working in one browser but does in another, it’s often a browser bug, but we’d like to know about it here anyway in case there’s something we can do.
