Links gone crazy

  • Unknown's avatar

I thought I was through composing my site and was doing a final check of the links. I am linking from my website at The onlygoodindian.net to my posts in wordpad. I had previously checked the links right after I set them up and they were fine – but this time found that a whole paragraph in my website linked to one of my posts and the other links had disappeared. I also found in wordpad that I’m unable to direct my posts the way I had initially. In other words, the posts info (4) naturally lead from one subject to the next. My website tech (circlepad) says “It could be you set a link on the whole paragraph by accident by doing a
link with no sub-selection.” I don’t know what he means. It’s such a mess and I had such high hopes for it…
Please help – I don’t know what to do.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, I’d be happy to see what I can do to help with these issues:

I am linking from my website at The onlygoodindian.net to my posts in wordpad. I had previously checked the links right after I set them up and they were fine – but this time found that a whole paragraph in my website linked to one of my posts and the other links had disappeared.

Is this problem on your CirclePad website at theonlygoodindian.net, or your WordPress.com blog at theonlygoodindianblog.wordpress.com? I took a look at your blog, and I didn’t see any problems with the links there.

I noticed that one of the paragraphs on your website links to this blog post: http://theonlygoodindianblog.wordpress.com/2013/08/29/vicious-circles-to-benign-circles/

If that’s the problem, you’ll need to contact CirclePad support for help fixing that link, because the tools you use to manage that website are separate from your WordPress.com blog.

I also found in wordpad that I’m unable to direct my posts the way I had initially. In other words, the posts info (4) naturally lead from one subject to the next.

I’m not sure I understand. Can you explain what you mean by leading from one subject to the next? Are you concerned about the order of the posts on your blog?

I’m not sure “I understand either!” It’s such a weird problem – I sent another request for assistance re three emails I received from y’all asking permission to allow a “ping” (or something like that) I never asked for a ping – don’t know what it is.
Is this what happened? that is …a “ping”?
Re your answer above – I can redo my page at Circlepad -I just don’t want the same thing happening again on my blog. Yes I would like to order my blogs…they WERE in order and now the post you quote above seems to have taken over and I don’t know what to do – in other words it’s stuck somehow – it refuses to order yes I guess that doesn’t make sense.
Sorry I’ve never put up a blog before…thank you so much for your patience.

As mentioned in your other support request, you can learn more about pingbacks here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/comments/pingbacks/

You can view your posts in order on your blog’s front page here: http://theonlygoodindianblog.wordpress.com/

Please let me know if you have any other questions about managing your blog! :)

Thank you for answering – but I still don’t understand how my posts changed themselves around. That is, I had them lined up the way I wanted and no matter what I do now they won’t go back the way I initially set them up. The first one I set up was PTSD and Marijuana. I put all the tags in there and now they show up on the post “vicious circles to benign circles” and nothing I do allows me to show tags where I put them to begin with.
How can I get the posts lined up the way they were to begin with?
Why would I get an email asking me if I approved a “pingback?” I understand I can find what it is – but my question is why I got the email in the first place since I never asked for a pingback ?

Let me see if I can help you get everything set up the way you’d like it:

How can I get the posts lined up the way they were to begin with?

You can view and manage your blog posts by going to Posts > All Posts in your dashboard at this link:

    https://theonlygoodindianblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

Your posts will appear in reverse chronological order on your blog (with the newest blog post at the top), the same way you see them in that list. You can change the order of the posts by changing the publish date for each post.

To do that, you can click on the post title to open the post editor. Then, look for the publish module on the right side of the screen. You will see “Published on:” with the publish date for that post. You can click on the “Edit” link there to change the publish date.

You can also edit the tags for each post in the post editor. You can use the tags module in the post editor to add tags to each post.

Be sure to click the blue Update button when you are done to save your changes.

Why would I get an email asking me if I approved a “pingback?” I understand I can find what it is – but my question is why I got the email in the first place since I never asked for a pingback ?

Pingbacks are automatically created when someone links to one of your blog posts. You don’t have to request them yourself. If you don’t want pingbacks, you can either ignore the emails to approve them or you can disable them: http://en.support.wordpress.com/comments/pingbacks/#disabling-pingbacks

Rachel – I have a case of the “stupid” that I can’t seem to shake – (and please understand that I am emotionally sort of messed up – I had to move in a hurry – and there is ongoing trauma) I understand what you meant about changing publishing dates – but my first date shows as 8/26 on the post I wanted to post first – the others are 8/29…the posts were lined up to begin with as I wanted them to be (as I posted them and I wasn’t having any problems until I experienced what I didn’t understand as happening on my site – that is – there was a sudden interruption from somewhere that I would liken to a “ping” sensation…and then I found my posts out of line and the tags refusing to post as I wanted them to…PLEASE dont’ tell me i’m crazy – I’m feeling crazy! but that’s what happened. Should I take them all down and start all over? Because I will if I have to….Thank you so much for your patience.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m very sorry to hear about the trauma you are experiencing! You shouldn’t have to take your blog posts down and start over — I’m happy to help you make sure they are in the right order and the tags are working properly. :) I started by looking at your blog here:

    http://theonlygoodindianblog.wordpress.com/

You will see your posts in reverse chronological order (with the last blog post appearing at the top of the page). These are the posts, in order from top to bottom:

    1. VICIOUS CIRCLES to BENIGN CIRCLES, Restorative Practices
    2. PTSD and WAR
    3. PTSD: Generational Transmission
    4. PTSD and Marijuana

The top post (“VICIOUS CIRCLES…”) is the only one that currently has tags on it.

Can you let me know what order you want the blog posts to be in, and what tags you want to have on each post? That way I can help you make sure that everything is set up the way you want them to be. Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

  • Unknown's avatar

Rachel- I just can’t tell you how much your kind words mean – moved me to tears…
To answer your question – they should be in reverse order – that is #4 should be first and so on with Vicious circles last…and the same tags can appear on allof them – and when I ty to put the tags in they don’t register…or something!
    God bless, Rachel.

they should be in reverse order – that is #4 should be first and so on with Vicious circles last

Your blog posts are displayed on the blog in reverse chronological order. That means the blog post with the latest date will appear first in the list, and they will go in backwards order until the blog post with the earliest date.

To get the blog posts in reverse order, you can change the publish dates on them — you can give #4 the latest date so it appears first in the list, and #1 the earliest date so it appears last in the list.

and the same tags can appear on allof them – and when I ty to put the tags in they don’t register…or something!

Ok, let’s try to figure out why those tags aren’t registering for you. To add the same tags on all of your posts, you can bulk edit them. We have an explanation for how bulk edit works here: Bulk Edit

To do this, go to Posts > All Posts in your dashboard. There, you can select your posts by checking the checkbox to the left of each post. In the Bulk Actions drop-down menu at the top of the page, select Edit and then click the Apply button.

In the Tags box, you can type in each tag you want to add to your posts. (You can separate the tags with commas.) When you’re done, click the blue Update button to save the tags.

If that doesn’t work, please let me know what steps you take and where you run into problems with it. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi- I bet you cringe when you see my email – but I WAS able to fix my tags with the bulk edit – thank you for that…but I am still puzzled – my posts show the earliest date as you suggested they should…the earliest date is at the bottom and on up as I entered them – it shows chronologically – from the bottom to the top…BUT if I enter the address on a search engine (for instance) I get the last post I published…that is, they won’t run as I need them to because one feeds into the next.
I hate to keep bothering you with this problem – but don’t understand…

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I’m so glad you were able to fix the tags! :)

As long as visitors go to the front page of your blog, they will see the posts chronologically from bottom to top, like this: http://theonlygoodindianblog.wordpress.com/

If you get to your site from a search engine, you may end up on a different page on your blog. However, if you go from there to the front page (for example, by clicking on your blog’s title) you will see the blog posts in order. That’s the post order that you can control. :)
