links in email notification to my followers not working
-
Hi There It has come to my attention that when my followers who subscribe by email receive a notification from my wordpress account, the hyper links back to my posts and site are not working. Can you please advise me as how to fix this?
Thanks

Hi Wilma,
Would you be able to click on one of the links that isn’t working and copy what is shown in your browser’s address bar? I just want to see which address you are being taken to — perhaps that will give us some clues.
Also, what happens when followers click the link? For example, they are seeing a specific error message.
Let’s go from there…

Hello Thanks for your response.
Sorry for the delay in replying. The odd thing is the links are now working when using my webmail but on my home computer, in outlook express,
the link is not taking me anywhere just showing expanded programming type language. I can not click on it to copy it. Perhaps it is an outlook error. One of my subscribers complained to me that the links were not working for her so I subscribed myself and encountered this error. It is strange to me.Thanks

Hi Wilma,
This sounds like a formatting issue of the email program you are using. Could you grab a screenshot of the weird link format that you or your subscribers are seeing so we can have a look?
You can use a tool like https://snag.gy/ to quickly grab and share a screenshot.

Hi Thanks I only see the text when I hover over the link… As soon as I try to Click Alt print screen it disappears. Clicking on the links does nothing. Hmmm. Sounds like a formatting issue. This could be what is causing problems for my subscriber as well I suppose.
Thanks

Hello
Hello I checked the settings on my email program and then I tried a test. I sent myself the link to my wordpress site using my email program and I was able to open that link without a problem. I am also able to open links from other sites when receiving emails. It is only emails sent automatically from my site to myself as a subscriber (and to other subscribers it seems) that are not working. That is odd. Any suggestions of things I can try?Wilma

A screenshot as I suggested above will give me more information. Are you able to grab one?
-
Hi that does not work because the bubble that shows up when I click on the link disappears when I do a screen grab. In the same email there is a link to a you tube video I embedded in my post and when I click on that it works and takes me to youtube…only the links to my wordpress site are not working.
-
@frenchapple10, I’m not positive whether this will work in Outlook since it’s been a while since I used it, but if you right-click on the link, can you choose to copy the URL, then paste it here?
Also, it looks like you have the Comment link highlighted. Is that the one that’s broken, or all they all broken for you?
-
One more thing, too: you mentioned seeing some kind of code. Could you get a screenshot of that?
-
Hello
When I right click on the Hyper link to my post and click copy the hyper link this is what I get…. Up, Up and Away no link, just the name of the post. . All the links to my wordpress site are broken, I do not know why the
comments is highlighted. What I see appears to be some kind of computer script or programing language, it is a paragraph or so in length As I have explained above, I cannot screen shot it, it disappears when I try to do that. I am normally good at problem solving issues. Here is the beginning of what I see when I click on the link Up, Up and Away ( which should lead to my post)

and it keeps going for a paragraph more…this happens for each link on the email except the one to the youtube video , which works just fine. Thanks for problem solving with me…

HI there,
Best way to test this is to see the email itself, so I’ve subscribed to email notifications to your site. If you’re willing to, can you please publish a test post? Else, let us know here once you’ve published the next regular post, and I can take a look at the email it sends out.
As an aside, I see the screen shot you added to snag.gy contains your personal email, so I’d recommend deleting that if you can find a way to do it from there.
-
And can you please find out which email client the subscriber who reported this to you is using? Are they also using Outlook, or something else?
-
Hello I have just posted so you can see. I deleted the snag.gy shot, thanks for the heads up. I am unable to contact the email client Tammy W. Unfortunately she commented on a test post I had sent to show a friend how to set up a new WordPress blog post and I have since deleted that post. I reviewed my list of email subscribers and I can not tell which one she is.
Thank you
W.

Update…on my latest email, the link to my post works, using my Outlook Express on my computer. I checked back to my previous post email and it still does not work. Strange.

Hmm, okay. The links for the last post also all work in the email I received, so that unfortunately doesn’t tell us anything :)
I’ll stay subscribed to your site for a while. As soon as you get the broken link issue again, let us know here and I can take a look at the subscription email I received.
But based on the earlier comments in this thread it does look like Outlook might be mangling the links. Most likely it’s a specific combination of characters in the URL that’s causing the problem, and because the URL is unique for each new post, it’s possible it could have been a one-time thing.

Hi thanks
None of the links are working for me on Outlook but are working on my webmail.
Gah! I don’t know if there is anything I can do about it.Wilma

Okay, then it definitely sounds like a problem on Outlook’s end. They’re likely not properly parsing the HTML in the links, or a special character in the link somewhere is throwing them off.
Please contact Outlook/Microsoft support so they can look into it from their end.
For yesterday’s post, the link in the email is this one:
https://public-api.wordpress.com/bar/?stat=groovemails-events&bin=wpcom_email_click&redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fcreartfuldodger.wordpress.com%2F2019%2F05%2F26%2Faround-the-world-in-eighty-days%2F&sr=1&signature=fcc135d2c91cf7fa4a6e6398d108c658&user=41762271&_e=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&_z=zPerhaps if you give that to the team over there they can see what’s being messed up on that end.
