Links keep changing
-
Greetings,
For example, my page http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/mexican-american-history-i/ the URL keeps changing to http://andrewpegoda.com/mexican-american-history-i/. Pages linked on this page, keep changing too from the link hyperlinked, etc.
To try and fix this, I have “unpublished” and republished the page, edited the slug, and everything in-between. When I fix it, it will work for a day or so and then change back.
There are several pages under the /teaching and /teaching/history thread that are doing things like that.
Any thoughts? Thank you
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Saw someone just tagged the theme I’m using. It’s not theme related. I just switched themes a few days ago (first switch in over two years), and my old theme did the same thing. Just now remembering to report the problem.
This does remind me that when making “pages” the new design doesn’t list anywhere near all of the page. I always take a few extra steps to use the old layout that has the full options.
Thank you.

Hi Andrew,
Sorry for the trouble! For now, you’ll need to continue editing those pages in your WP Admin dashboard:
https://andrewpegodadotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
You can head to the Pages section there and click each page’s title to edit it. If a page’s link has changed, you can re-select the Parent page in Page Attributes section there.
For example, for your Mexican American History I page, you can re-select the “History Courses” page as the Parent page in the editor. That will correct the link to the page so it’s listed under the History Courses page.
Our team is aware that there’s an issue with how that works in the newer page editor, but we don’t have a set timeline yet for when that issue will be resolved. Using the WP Admin editor will keep you from having any issues with those page links in the meantime. :)

Thank you for replying. I have done everything you suggested, many, many, many times, and it still does not work. It has only recently stopped working.

Just to followup more, the problem is not related to the classic or BBB editor. It’s really important that my pages link correctly. Again, I have tried unpublishing and republishing pages, editing the “slug” different ways. When I fix it, it will work for a few hours and then revert back. I have “fixed” it and it has changed by itself over a dozen times. I really appreciate your help and time in this on-going problem.

Hi Andrew,
When the page reverts back, does that happen after you edit it? Or do you mean it changes even if you haven’t opened the page in the editor?
-
Hi there,
For example:
On my page if you go to teaching, then history courses, then Mexican American History I. This page was created in the classic editor. The page hierarchies were set such that it would go to, the setup, and the URL would be: http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/mexican-american-history-i/ but when you go to the page the actual URL is http://andrewpegoda.com/mexican-american-history-i/.
I have gone into the classic editor over a dozen times and unpublished the page and then republished the page with all the hierarchies teaching/history-courses/ etc reset. etc. etc. I have tried manually editing the slug different ways. etc. etc.
Each time I refix the hierarchies in he classic editor such that the URL on the actual page is http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/mexican-american-history-i/ it will work and this will stay as the URL on that page for a few hours but then it will change back to http://andrewpegoda.com/mexican-american-history-i/.
The problem remains that some how WP is automatically disregarding page settings and rules after several hours. This problem is affecting most of the pages under andrewpegoda.com/teaching/. This problem has only been occurring for a few months.
Does this help?
Thank you -
Hi Andrew,
Rather than manually editing the slug, have you tried changing the Parent setting in the Page Attributes module in the editor? I just want to double check that, as that’s what’s needed to maintain that hierarchy for your pages.
-
Yes, over a dozen times, I have reset the Page Attributes to the correct setting. It will be corrected / the way I want it for a few hours and then go back to disregarding all settings.
-
Here’s another page where the system changed it.
The URL should be (and was): http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/sp15-acc-hist2301/spring-2015-midterm-evaluation/
It is now: http://andrewpegoda.com/sp15-acc-hist2301/spring-2015-midterm-evaluation/
Something altered all kinds of things under the /teaching/ page.
-
Hi Andrew,
I just corrected the two pages you mentioned, by selecting the parent page from the page attributes section in the editor:
http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/mexican-american-history-i/
http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/sp15-acc-hist2301/spring-2015-midterm-evaluation/
Right now those URLs are working — if you notice them change again, please let me know so I can keep investigating that for you.
-
Give it a little while. By tomorrow morning or this afternoon, they will have changed again if it gillies the patten it has for a month.
I do wish this problem would be given more sincere, prompt attention. I know a good amount about setting up webpages, have been a premium paying member for going on three years. I wouldn’t have reported this problem without trying everything possible on my end multiple times.
Thank you for your time and understanding.

Hi Andrew,
I do wish to help resolve this issue, and I’m sorry for the misunderstanding in my first reply. (I’d seen a similar issue related to editing pages in the newer editor and thought what you were describing was the same issue.)
At this stage I haven’t been able to reproduce the issue you’re describing, so I don’t yet have enough information to know where the problem lies. If you see the problem pop up again on those pages please let me know and I’ll take another look as soon as I can, to try to track down what’s going wrong.

Hi there,
Thank you. The link remains correct but I fully expect to to revert back soon. I’m checking regularly. I tried creating a new page and new blog post and publishing these to see if that was the cause and it doesn’t appear that is related.
There are still tons of pages under /teaching/history that aren’t functioning as created. One of dozens of examples: http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/african-american-history/ changed to http://andrewpegoda.com/african-american-history/.
Will be in touch.
-
And, sometime in the past hour or two, it changed back to http://andrewpegoda.com/mexican-american-history-i/ instead of http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/mexican-american-history-i/ as it has done for a couple of months now.
It *might* have happened after I changed the hyperlink for the twitter library link.
I really hope we can solve this. I have dozens of webpages with messed up URL paths. :)
Thank you for your help.

Hi Rachel,
I’ve been running all kinds of tests. The problem is related to when any hyperlink to another page is added, edited, or moved to a given page and the connected pages.
What should be http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/texas-history/ is now http://andrewpegoda.com/texas-history/
and what should be http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/sp15-acc-hist2301/ is now http://andrewpegoda.com/sp15-acc-hist2301/
The other link you fixed is now back to http://andrewpegoda.com/sp15-acc-hist2301/spring-2015-midterm-evaluation/ instead of http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/sp15-acc-hist2301/spring-2015-midterm-evaluation/
These changed happened the second I adjusted a hyperlink.
As you can see, this is some kind of error in the WP system and has altered the path of at least 50 or so pages on my website.
Hope these details help reach a solution!
Thanks!

Just an update: I keep finding more and more things the WP system has altered. Once it is fixed on WP’s end, it’s going to take me hours and hours to reset everything as I created it.
I found one more problem, too. This link http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/fa14-uh-hist1378/syllabus/ changed to http://andrewpegoda.com/fa14-uh-hist1378/syllabus/ and when http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/history-courses/fa14-uh-hist1378/syllabus/ is directly visited it takes people to http://andrewpegoda.com/syllabus/ which was created as http://andrewpegoda.com/teaching/student-success-courses/syllabus/.
Please understand it is very important for a variety of reasons that people be able to get this information when need off of my webpage. Currently, some glitch in WP is messing up all kinds of stuff.
Please, please given this urgent attention. I am very likely not the only person having such problems.

When you changed that hyperlink, did you use the newer editor at https://wordpress.com/page or the editor in your WP Admin dashboard?
-
Thank you for your reply. I only understood that the BBB editor shouldn’t (and actually can’t) be used for pages. I’ve switched to doing everything in the old editor. We’ll see if the links keep working in a few hours. WP should really disable the BBB given how many problems it has and causes.
