Links not working

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey there,

My girlfriend and I have just made our first blogs today but unfortunately every link you click on her page seems to take her to the wordpress sign up page.

    What are we doing wrong?

    This is her blog: http://www.juicebox.wordpress.com

You mean a clickable link? Make sure that the link is closed by clicking /link.

Is it the Juicebox link in the blogroll?

Check the link in the dashboard. I suspect it’s set to point to “signup” rather than the actual link.

If it is set correctly then you’ll (I’m afraid!) need to raise it as a feedback issue.

I also polietly point out that hotlinking of graphics like that U2 pic is not cool as well, especially since you’re not giving credit for it to the copyright holder. You can upload graphics to your blog. You may want to review the FAQ on it if you’re not clear on how to do it.

Hi, I’d like to second this problem. Just created a new blog here, http://sunnysideup.wordpress.com/ — and all the links go to the signup page.

So the title link goes to http://wordpress.com/signup
and “About Sunny Side Up” points to http://wordpress.com/signup/about/
    even though
    http://sunnysideup.wordpress.com/about
is a valid page, and has what I want.

I guess the base URL for the entire blog is not set correctly. Any help on fixing this is much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Shami

    I’m not so polite.

That is bandwidth theft plain and simple, and sooner or later they may be hearing from Slate about it.

    With the U2 picture, that’s hotlinking?? http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2160/untitled2af1.png

I thought hotlinking meant that when you place a clickable link on your site that leads to an image. So my entire blog is hotlinking?? But other blogs, who even make tons of money, do this.

Hotlinking is when you display an image on your site that is hosted elsewhere, thus using up the bandwidth of the other site without actually sending them any visitors. Bandwidth costs money, so this is pretty universally considered to be bad netiquette (I really hate that word, but it fits best).

I host images at supload and imageshack. But that’s what they are there for, right?

Hi, not to be a nag about this, but I’m trying to post my link problem to a “links broken” thread, which seems to be veering off into image hosting. The links being generated by WP are broken: please see my post above, or click on
    http://sunnysideup.wordpress.com/
and see for yourself. Any help with this problem is very much appreciated, since I can’t use wordpress until I can fix this. Thanks.

Ok, as I posted in my first reply, did you look at the link as it is defined in the “links” section of the dashboard?

    What did it say?

Remember that for the links to work they need to have the http:// and the full www. in the link otherwise the system may thinks it’s a relational link and try and point it to dodgy places.

sunnysideup, your links are all directing properly for me so it must be something broken on your end. Very weird.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ah! Confusion reigns!

Sunnysideup: As wank says, your links are all directing ok.

My last post was aimed at egoclip and juicebox. Sorry!

Yes, I see that. I wonder if my leaving feedback last night prompted someone to fix the problem. It was broken last night; it works fine this morning. Same browser, no reboots or anything.

I guess it isn’t broken right now, so no complaints. (Shrug.)
    Thanks.

    Entirely possible!

Now just to see if the juicebox ones are sorted….

The image was coming from slade.com originally. Using the sites you list above are fine but for images, I would just use WP.com space myself so that you don’t worry about the second sites being down.

You do something wrong, you’re going to get called on it. Stating that you’re spending down the street because the sky is blue in not an acceptable defense.

Also cornell asked you a question which you never answered about what you had entered for the link. Before complaining about responses, make sure you’re not doing the same thing. :)
