Links Not Working
-
When I click on a link in the Text Widget, it adds the URL to the end of the existing WordPress URL in the browser window and comes up with an error message. I’ve tried every available suggestion, including preparing a draft post and using that html—all to no avail. Any suggestions?

I believe you are referring to Etsy item links.
Currently a workaround that some of us are using is to simply take a screenshot of our Etsy shop or favorites, crop it and add the image to an image widget with the link going to your shop or favorites page. You can learn more about using the Image widget here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/image-widget/

Thank you. I saw this post. What I also found was this post which referred me to a tutorial on this blog:
How to create an “Etsy Mini Widgit” for wordpress.com using HTML
The tutorial works, however, the links within the Text Widget don’t work. When I click on a link, it adds the URL to the end of WordPress URL and returns an error message.
Sorry if this doesn’t make sense….I’m not a techie so not up on all the appropriate lingo.

I was afraid of that, however, the Text Widget link to PayPal right above my Etsy Text Widget works fine and all the links go where they’re supposed to go. Could there be a bug in one and not the other?

Oh, dang – try this – just add http:// before your links — so,
<p> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/182383803/crocheted-shawl-in-beautiful-vivid?ref=shop_home_active_1" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/032/0/5454649/il_170x135.575735415_p76e.jpg" width="130" height="130"></a> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/182371274/crocheted-shawl-in-beautiful-shades-of?ref=related-0" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/0/5454649/il_170x135.575824338_o2vb.jpg" width="130" height="130"></a> </p>Tested here: http://smutek.ninja/testing-stuff/
Hope this helps!

I really appreciate your help! I tried this previously and it didn’t work. Just tried it again and still no go. The link comes up in the URL window, but is added after my blog address. I’m using a Chrome browser and have had no problems before this. Also tried this on Safari and no luck. Is that all you changed was the http:// before the links? By the way, there was an http:// before the Etsy shop name….no luck. I’m really stumped here…..

No problem at all!
Yes, for the links section I just appended http:// before the link, so instead of use
This should do the trick –
<p> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/182383803/crocheted-shawl-in-beautiful-vivid?ref=shop_home_active_1" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/032/0/5454649/il_170x135.575735415_p76e.jpg" width="130" height="130" /></a> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/182371274/crocheted-shawl-in-beautiful-shades-of?ref=related-0" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/0/5454649/il_170x135.575824338_o2vb.jpg" width="130" height="130" /></a> </p><p> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/192227219/crocheted-shawl-or-wrap-cranberry-tones?ref=listing-shop-header-2" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/033/0/5454649/il_170x135.612048497_q935.jpg" width="130" height="130" /></a> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/163130100/crocheted-shawl-or-wrap-cranberry-and?ref=listing-shop-header-3" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/020/0/5454649/il_170x135.503258263_5z9d.jpg" width="130" height="130" /></a> </p><p> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/177226904/eight-all-cotton-facial-scrubbies-pads?ref=shop_home_active_5" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/017/0/5454649/il_170x135.556374841_kl7i.jpg" width="130" height="130" /></a> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/186890283/8-all-cotton-facial-scrubbies-pads-or?ref=related-2" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/031/0/5454649/il_170x135.592035652_hnv5.jpg" width="130" height="130" /></a> </p>Check my test page – I have them all working. http://smutek.ninja/testing-stuff/
Can you copy/paste your code for this widget, in its entirety, into this message thread? If so, I’ll be happy to see if I can get you sorted out with code to paste back into your widget.

Sorry, there’s some weirdness in the formatting there –
basically, instead of:
<a href="www.stuff">I used:
<a href="http://www.stuff">And they are working fine in my test here – http://smutek.ninja/testing-stuff/

This is why I’m so frustrated….I’m doing what you’re doing and have tried what you’re doing and none of it is working for me! I’ve looked at your tests and they’re working fine! I also cleared my cache and browser history. After I make changes, I save them and refresh the page I’m using to check the changes. No luck.
Here is what I have:
<h1 style=”text-align: center;”>TooCozy</h1>
<h2 style=”“font-family: verdana; color: black; text-align: center; font-size: 8px”;”><i>hand-knit. crocheted. well made.</i></h2><hr />

</p>TooCozy should be centered above the hand knit slogan, but at this point, I’m more concerned about the links not working.
Thanks again a million times for your help.

Looks like it stripped all of your links out – can you use the code button, above the post editor box? Just click the code button one time, paste your code, then click it again.

No worries, this should do the trick for you. I suggest making a new test widget, then copy/paste the code below into it. Once you’ve confirmed it’s working, delete your old widget.
<h1 style="text-align:center;font-family:verdana;font-size:22px;color:black”;"> <a href="www.etsy.com/shop/TooCozy"> <ins>TooCozy</ins></a></h1> <h2 style="color:black;text-align:center;font-size:8px”;"> <i>hand-knit. crocheted. well made.</i></h2> <hr> <p> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/182383803/crocheted-shawl-in-beautiful-vivid?ref=shop_home_active_1" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/032/0/5454649/il_170x135.575735415_p76e.jpg" width="130" height="130"></a> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/182371274/crocheted-shawl-in-beautiful-shades-of?ref=related-0" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/0/5454649/il_170x135.575824338_o2vb.jpg" width="130" height="130"></a> </p><p> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/192227219/crocheted-shawl-or-wrap-cranberry-tones?ref=listing-shop-header-2" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/033/0/5454649/il_170x135.612048497_q935.jpg" width="130" height="130"></a> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/163130100/crocheted-shawl-or-wrap-cranberry-and?ref=listing-shop-header-3" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/020/0/5454649/il_170x135.503258263_5z9d.jpg" width="130" height="130"></a> </p><p> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/177226904/eight-all-cotton-facial-scrubbies-pads?ref=shop_home_active_5" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/017/0/5454649/il_170x135.556374841_kl7i.jpg" width="130" height="130"></a> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/186890283/8-all-cotton-facial-scrubbies-pads-or?ref=related-2" target="_blank"> <img border="1" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/031/0/5454649/il_170x135.592035652_hnv5.jpg" width="130" height="130"></a> </p>Let us know if this gets you up and running.

Interestingly enough, a second test Text Widget would not show up on our blog with Chrome. I went through all the motions of adding it, but couldn’t get it to show up on the blog. I switched to Safari, pasted your code into a new Text Widget (as you instructed) and it works just fine. I’m not sure what you did, but it seems Chrome might have been part of the issue. I’ve been using Chrome for about a year without a problem, so go figure.
Looks like I’m good to go. Thanks again—I really appreciate your help. Two days of feeling absolutely helpless with all this was no fun! :>)

No problem at all, I’m glad I was able to help.
For what it’s worth, I use Chrome as well, so I’m not sure why there’s weirdness with your setup. Either way, I’m really glad you’ve got it fixed.

I’ve beat this to death in my head and the only things I can think of is that Chrome gets a bit wonky when I have too many browser windows open—a bad habit of mine. Also, I have a few ad blocking/tracker blocking add-ons which may not play well with WordPress. These add-ons aren’t on Safari, which leads me to believe they may be the culprit. I’m determined to figure it out, but in the meantime, the Text Widget is up and running and I’m thrilled to death! Thanks again!
