Links or Category Dropdowns?

So. Hmm.
I’m trying to figure out which is better………simple text links or one of the Category Widget dropdowns?
What I want to do is have a hierarchy of options:
1. (Link or Dropdown) ‘Recipe’
a. (First Option) ‘Alphabetically’
b. (Second Option) ‘By Spirit’
c. (Third Option) ‘Etc..’
2. (Link or Dropdown) ‘Books’
a. (First Option) ‘x Type’
b. (Second Option) ‘y Type’The point is – is it POSSIBLE to have choices for the Category Widget that will only show up in the CHOSEN (ie: Recipe) Widget Dropdown and not another of the Widget Dropdowns (ie: Books)?
Hmm.
Does that make sense?
Otherwise, I could just have simple links, and then pages that link off of the Page Parent/simple links.
But, I am hoping to have three or four category drop down boxes. Is that possible?

I have the Alphabetical dropdown with the number of posts next to each. Much better for my blog considering I have hundreds of categories.

It looks like you have coded the various drop downs (and you need to share that code for the rest of us!). The category widget can’t be used the way you wanted it because it just doesn’t have those options.

Yeah, it looks like I can only have one dropdown category widget on this particular theme. Oh well. I can deal. At least the hours that I spent on this makes me know really well how to make this thing work.
