Links question

I’ve searched the forum and found lots links to try to help me, but I think I must be doing
    something wrong.

I have the “categories and Links/blogroll” widgets in my sidebar and my “links” widget is still saying “There are no option’s for this widget”.
I’ve been trying to add links in the categories section but nothing seems to be working.

All I want to do is have a widget on the sidebar that I can add links to, for people to navigate through my blog to other sections.
I don’t really want to link to other websites yet, I think I know how to do that after playing around with it.

Does anyone have a simple explanation of how to do this?

    Thanks
    Lou

    Sorry forgot add my blog
    http://subtledreamz.wordpress.com/

If you look to where I’ve put the widget named “Layouts” on the righthand side that’s where I want to add links to.

The categories widget isn’t for your links; it’s where the categories that you assign to posts (similar to tags) will be listed.

What do you mean by ‘other sections’ that you’d like links to? If you mean pages, then you want the Pages widget. The Links widget is really designed for links to other blogs/websites.

At the moment, you have no posts and that is why you have no categories. Write some posts, assign them categories and watch the list grow.

Ah right I think I see what you mean, yes I want readers to be able to go other pages within my blog, when I have them up and running…

I’ll give that a try thankyou for your fast reply, I’ve been trying to do the link thing all morning…

Yes, most of these things are easier to work out when you have some content to play with. Make a couple of pages, write a few posts and then see if you can get things the way you want. You can always delete stuff later.

Your a star thankyou so much it worked…

I do have another quick question hope you don’t mind.
when I added the page widget before I had “About me, Contact me etc” in there, which was meant to be in the Navigation tabs, now I’ve delete the above in the “pages” widget – they seem to have vanished from my Nav Tab’s too..
How to do I get the Nav Tabs I want back up there?

    Again, ty for your help.

The pages widget and the navigation bar are two different ways of displaying essentially the same information. Both contain links to your pages. So if you delete the pages from one, they’ll disappear from the other as well. You’ll need to have them in both places, I’m afraid.

Also, just so you know, you don’t need apostrophes in any of your page titles (blues, browns, reds). ;)

So I do need to have them in the pages widget to show up in the Nav Tabs,
I’m sure i’ve seen a blog where they don’t have that, they just have info in
Nav tabsand it doesn’t appear in their “pages” widget?

    I’ll get rid of the apostrophes…. :-)

    Thanks again.

Oh no i’ve just noticed that everything I put in the “page” widget is appearing in my Nav Tabs?
Is there any way of just having what i’ve put in “Page” widget and not show up on the Nav Tabs?

    Sorry for all the questions…

No, that was my point. Your pages widget and the nav bar are showing the same information.

I wonder if a better solution for you would be to put your layouts into categories, rather than pages. I don’t know exactly what you’re planning but if you have a series of layouts that you want to put into individual posts but allow readers to be able to see in groups, then categories are what you want. Again, you can’t set this up until you have some posts to work with.

Then you can just use your pages for things like About and Contact, which will appear in the nav bar. You could then get rid of the pages widget altogether.

Ok I’ll think i’ll do that, that’s what I want, my Nav Tabs to say certain things and for readers to be able to see in groups..

Thankyou very much for all your help, it’s much appreciated.

The Pages widget exists for two reasons. The one is that some themes don’t have header page tabs. The other is that if you have pages in hierarchies (“parent” and “child” pages), then the child pages show in the sidebar only, not the header. So if you only want a few pages like the three you’ve got at the moment, you don’t need the Pages widget at all.

As rosclarke says, what you’re looking for is probably not pages but publishing posts assigned to various categories (so that, with the Categories widget added, visitors can select a particular category of posts).

Yep that’s it, ty both very much for your help.
