  When writing a new post how can I insert a link to one of my previous posts? I have tried using etc but it doesn’t seem to work.

  It’s easy. Just do it like a link to an external website, either in the visual editor or the HTML editor. Copy the link from the browser bar when you’re on the post you want to link to (not the main blog page, that particular post) and use that as your link.

  And if you don’t want pingbacks to appear on your previous posts http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/04/23/can-i-stop-self-pings/

  Sometimes though, self-pings are useful if you want to let readers know that there is new information about the same topic elsewhere on your blog.
