Links to open in new tab
-
Setting links to open in a new tab takes too many steps.
First, I can only insert the link. Thus: Select text; Ctrl + K, or click the link icon in the floating box. I get a text box (“Search or type URL”); I can only select the page to link to.
If I want that link to open in a new page, then I have to click on the linked text again, select “Edit”, select “Advanced”, tick the “Open in new tab” option, then “Save”.
But on my workplace’s WordPress domain, inserting the link and setting it to open in a new page is all done from within the same box, in a single step.

Hi Nick. Excellent question and I definitely understand your frustration. It looks like you’re not the only one with this issue and it appears that staff is already pursuing this issue (Adding a link to open in a new tab). Meanwhile, there is a bit of a complex solution if you click on “Edit as HTML” but that wouldn’t be any quicker unless you had multiple links in one block. And it would be more prone to errors unless you’re really comfortable with editing HTML. So the multiple-click method is probably your best way right now.
On your workplace’s WordPress website, if you’re able to click the box to open a link in a new tab all in a single step, then that website is probably a self-hosted WordPress.org website instead of a managed-hosting WordPress.com website like grandestgame.wordpress.com. There are a lot of similarities but some substantial differences in how the two types of WordPress websites are managed. Check out WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org if you want to learn more about the two versions of WordPress. I hope this helps you a bit. -
