Links, widgets and panels, oh my!

  • Unknown's avatar

I am having an issue trying to make my links play well with my widgets. I want my links in both Footer One and Footer two. Footer three is supposed to be my blogroll. Well, I am having an issue with that. When I put links in the first footer, it won’t let me add other links in footer two. i want three columns. I must be doing something wrong. Also, my social Media buttons arent’ showing in my sidebar. on my first Panel. Here is my website. Tricia (email visible only to moderators and staff) I’m customizing Lodestar.

    Any information will be helpful.

  • Hi –

    Thanks for writing to us.

I’ve had a quick look at what you have started on tricia9lynne.wordpress.com.

For reference, here is that theme demo https://lodestardemo.wordpress.com/ and the setup instructions https://wordpress.com/theme/lodestar

Take a look at the widget section in the set up instructions.

Are you trying to use the same setup for the Links widget in footer 1 and 2?

I wanted a continuation of links from a certain section of the links. Not the same exact thing on footer 2.
I’ve read all the instructions as well for the theme. I guess I am frustrated.

  • I’m currently seeing links in the first two columns. Were you able to sort this out?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, because if you notice, the links are the same in each column. I want to have a continuation of different links on the other side. I’m planning to add more links, as this site is going to be an informational site for writers. So I need to have each column holding different links.
As for the sidebar, I still have the follow button and the social media widgets there, but they aren’t showing up, either. What am I doing wrong? It’s all in the widgets. I’ve rearranged and deleted widgets in the footers, and nothing works.

    Thank you.

  • Right, the problem here is that the Links widget has only two options: It shows ALL links you have added in the Links section of the dashboard, like the widget you currently have in Footer Area 1, or just one category, like the widget you have in Footer Area 2.

So if you want to control which links show in which column in the footer, you’ll need to use separate Links widgets for each category of links, i.e. you’ll need multiple Links Widgets in each widget area.

The Blogs I Follow widget you have in Footer area 3 will just list all sites you follow in the Reader, with the site you followed most recently at the top, and you can control how many sites it should show, but they cannot be ordered or categorised in any way.

The problem with the social media icons widget you have added is that you have entered the full links for your LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc, profiles, but that widget only wants your username for those services.

But, that widget is also deprecated, meaning it’s not maintained any more, and the only sites that still see it are sites that already had it active when we retired it. We’ve replaced it with a Social Icons widget that’s much easier to use – just paste in your profile link for a particular service, and if we have support for that service’s icon, the icon shows up automatically. So I’d strongly recommend you switch to the newer widget, and add your social profiles to that one instead.

That said, your theme does not display the sidebar on the static front page, which is why you don’t see it there. There’s nothing you can do to change this, as this is how the theme is designed. The sidebar widgets will only be visible on the Posts page, and on single posts and pages.

Let me know if you have any more questions about this.

Oh, thank you! That explains it beautifully. I’ll play with it today and see what happens. There were days in this past week where I just wanted to cry. Thank you for your help. One last question. I am going to try to add a panel underneath my static page and add two columns like in the example. I have to create a new page for that, right? If I do, can I add links to that? and put my social media button there?

Once again, thank you. I really love this theme.

    Okay,
Today I spent four hours trying to create each link widget for my second footer. I could not make it work, I did not want a copy of a link category that I had in footer one, so I created new categories without the links put in yet so I could copy them straight into footer two. Well, apparently I can’t do that. I need to have links with the categories. But I still don’t want duplicates of links on footer two. Is it even possible to do that without having a duplicate copy on footer one and footer two?

Also, I used the new widget for the social media buttons and unfortunately, I couldn’t make that work either.
After five hours, I am done for the day.

I hope this helps someone else.

Before you add the second links widget, you will need to add the links to that particular category. Once you have done that, you can add the second widget and then set it to show that second category of links.

For the social icons, which is what I’m assuming you wish to add, you will need to use the Social Icons widget. It appears you are trying to use the Follow Blog widget. That widget is used to all people to follow your blog.
