Links will not attach to images — appear as URL

  I always have been able to attach a link to an image.

  Today, that is not possible. Instead of attaching to the image, the URL appears below the image.

  In some cases, the image disappears entirely, and only the link remains.

  I do not use the WordPress gallery, but insert images from my own ftp server.

  This isn’t acceptable. Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround? I do not want my blog cluttered with links where they should not appear, and I certainly want to be able to insert images. Thanks.
