Link/sorting issue
-
I have several categories with multiple posts within each category. When I click on a category, the posts are not in the order that I originally put them in. Also, the ‘forward’ and ‘backward’ links are always linking the the same posts that are not in the same category. Essentially, what I understood should happen is that the ‘forward’ and ‘backward’ links should roll you through the posts within that same category. Is there something wrong with some sorting file within the blog?

All posts appear in order of their publication dates and that date is embedded in the post URL. When we publich a post it’s autmatically posted to the Categories and/or Tags pages that we assigned to it in order of the date of publication. We cannot change permalink structure on WordPress.com blogs. Please read these entries and take note of “slugs”.

Problem is….that’s not what’s happening. All the entries used to show up in alphabetical order because that was the order that they were entered. But that is not really the problem I am most concerned about. If I go to a category (say, ‘Adult Fiction’) and click on the first link there (say ‘Daughter of Grace’ though even this will change from use to use) the backward link is ‘AB Simpson’ and the forward link is ‘Apologetics: An Introduction.’ However, neither of these books are actually part of the ‘Adult Fiction’ category and thus should not be in that position. If I click on either of those, it brings me to another post entry but either appears as though it is the end of the list. But it does not bring you back to the entry that you just left. Am I misunderstanding the purpose of this navigation tool?

Yes.
You’re mixing up the Category page and the blog post. The individual blog post will point to the post previous to it and the post after it, regardless of what categories it or they are in. While it might be logical to expect it to confine itself to other posts within the same category if you’ve come to it from a category page, that’s just not how WordPress.com blog posts operate. It’s how the Category Page operates.

OK….I get that about categories…disappointing, but I get it. So then why is is that irrespective of what post I pick, the same two posts show up as links and when I click on either one I get to ‘the end of the line’ as it were. If it were working the way that you are describing, should I not be able to scroll through every single post…and wouldn’t the backward/forward links be the posts that were created immediately before and immediately after the post I am on?
BTW….thank you to all that are helping…I really appreciate it!

Your first two posts are dated July 21, 2011, 9.46AM. You get to “the end of the line” after those two because all the rest are dated July 21, 2011, 9.47AM. When you’ve published 1423 posts with the same date and time stamp, you shouldn’t expect the previous-next system to work.
Sorry, but your blog is an absurdity: your categories should be pages, and your posts should be nothing but info listed in the content of those pages.
