List all posts

Is it possible to list all posts in a page somehow? I am using 1 post per page setup, and even I had hard time finding the “previous entries” (which, btw. in my case should be previous entry) link.

I just want to list post titles and links, not the entire articles.

    Thanks in advance

Like setting up clickable links that lead to the entire articles?

Yeah.. I got it figured out now, with using page templates, but these are not available in all themes.

serbianmess – If you look in the FAQ you will find a section on how to create an “index page”. I think that’s what you’re aiming towards.

TT, I think he or she is thinking more of the crawl page that I have on my blog. I use a plug in that I’ve modified. Blix has a Page template that breaks down Posts by month and then by Category.

I do note that it is broken though in Netscape 7.2 as the sidebar drops down. I’ll send in a feedback for you.

Cheers drmike – we’ll get that looked at :)

drmike, yes, that’s what I was looking for. I changed the theme, although that’s not the happiest solution really (I don’t really like the new theme). But it works, I guess.

*AHEM* drmike. This is apparently dumb question day but coyotes are afraid of looking or sounding stupid so here goes. What useful purpose does a crawl page serve? How do you use it? When do you use it?

    Two reasons:

    1) Allows search engines to see every single page on your site. That’s kind of moot though since I know Google stops spidering a page after the first 100 or so links.

    2) So that users can find a specific post that may interest them.

So it’s basically functioning like an index page that is not alphabetized or dated but each post is linked. Is that the gist?

  • Unknown's avatar

Pretty much. It’s just a list. I think the plugin I use puts them in date order. I can’t use it on the webcomic since it also exposed the ones already in there for the future.

But can someone help me make an alphabetized list of all posts? I cannot see where the index process would help since I do not want by category, but rather Alphabetized by entry name (sort of a table of contents which would update as I go along).

    @ barkowitz
Blogs are set up to record only by earliest date entry to the latest. They do not have an alphabetic title or author listing function programmed into them. In other words, there is no internal programming for what you are trying to achieve.

Basically you have to use a blank page or a blank post and then construct the entire index (for want of a better word) from scratch alphabetizing title by title as you go along and inserting links to each entry that you make.

You would need custom code on any flavour of WP blog.

It could also stress the server if the list had to be dynamically built each time if you have a lot of entries over time.

As TT says you would need to create it yourself.

    Is it worth that time?

    Is it worth that time?

From a SEO point of view, since this is usually when it comes up, probably not. Most search engines usually stop scanning a page after the first hundred links. Heck, I even removed it from my site.

Yeah, my issue is that the blog is sort of my online book of poetry so I was searching for a way to leave a master list of contents…

Timethief, I like your idea, though, and guess I could do that for want of a better solution! Over in MT, there was a method using CSS to provide a list of entries. Guess it won’t be so easy here. Thanks for the help though!

In one of my many re-incarnations in this life I was a librarian. I think I know where you’re coming from. Although the original creation of the index page seems like a big project now (labor of love?) to get started, after that the updating a chapter or an entry at a time shouldn’t be all that onerous, right? :)
