List of links has disappeared

    Hi,
I had lists of links displayed in the right-hand column, by category. They’ve disappeared. The links are still there, neatly arranged by category, in the dashboard. But the lists are no longer displayed on my blog.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sadly it seems that WordPress.com is deprecating the old Links widget. Currently the only way to display them is to manually recreate the links in a list block. Here’s a staff reply about this https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/did-you-remove-the-old-widgets-with-links/#post-4046593

More information about the Links block here https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/list-block/

There is a Blogroll block in the works, but it works very differently from the old Links widget. More on that here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/blogroll-block/ At the moment we can’t add external links to it.

More information about the List block, not Links block.

Only now I noticed that the old way the links I created for my blogroll has ended. The links of the blogroll do not appear anymore in the main sidebar of my blog. Having links in your sidebar is rather important for being part of a network, and not in the least also for SEO aims. Iover the years I created a very substantial organized overview for my purposes. This disapperance is a substantial loss to easy use and reliable functionality of WordPress. The age of the block editor has its limits… In my/wp-admin view I still have the Links section, hopefully soon a new widget/block will come to restore this important feature of any blog. Not having a quick way to create a blogroll in your sidebar constitutes a major bug in need of a clear fix!

Thanks for your feedback. You can still manually create a list of external links using the List block widget.

Yes, manually recreating my blogroll is an option, but surely WP has the ingenuity to create a block/widget or menu part that can perform a service that is not just something classic, but an essential feature of any blog, with or without the block editor, with a classic or modern theme. It is easier than integrating a continuous spelling checker, another thing that disappeared within WP without a successor. As a former IT tester I call such loss of functionality regression. Candid and clear communication about such things would certainly help to appease me and other loyal users, I have used WP now for fifteen years… Using a newe theme would not help me either, I suppose.

I noticed something else today, too. To my disbelief it seems in a complete export of your blog the links section is not included,l nor are they mentioned when you choose to export separate parts like posts, catgeories and pages.

As for creating quickly a text documentn with all my links, manually copying does alas not include all links completely. A webscraper might help. I suppose, but I think there is a need for including the links section in an export when the new functionailty to put your own links selection automatically in the main sidebar resurfaces, hopefully in the near future. The blogroll deserves care and attention from WP!
