Listing posts as sidebar links?

    Hi folks

I’m new to wordpress and trying to figure out some design tricks for my site for a game I’m developing. I set up a blog here at first, but then figured out that I needed to install it on the site I already have (http://www.blackwatergulch.com/blog/). Basically I want to use WordPress not so much as a traditional blog but more like for content management for the site. So I have everything divided up into categories and subcategories. What I want to do is have just 1 article displayed on a page, except for the main news page that can have the usual 10.

There’s a few things I’d like to do. First, for the main categories “The Game” and “The Hobby”, I’d like it to be like a static page with info that never changes, but the sub-categories can be listed on the left menu. Right now I was able to get all categories listed (on every page), but I want it to just list the sub categories for the section you’re in.

Next, when you go into one of those sub categories, like “Strategy” for example… I want it to only display the newest post, but the sidebar will have a menu listing every other post in the Strategy section.

Hope that makes sense. Can anyone help or give me some hints? I’m new to wordpress and just have a really basic knowledge of PHP, but I’m a wiz with HTML & CSS.

    Thanks in advance :)

    Tim

    Hello there,
Wordpress.com is a multiuser blogging platform. Here the template files underlying our themes are shared and that means all blogs wearing the same them are using the same template. We cannot edit either themes or templates. We cannot access those files at all. Only Staff can access them as every edit they make affects all blogs wearing the same theme. Please read this support documentation entry WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: The differences In short you will be able to accomplish what you have stated if you hire a web host and set up a WordPress.org install.

Thanks, up till now I didn’t notice there was a difference between wordpress.com and .org.. anyway, what I did was install the .org software on my site already. I spent most of the day reading up in the codex site, and it looks like I’m going to have to make a different category template for the ones that I want to display differently

Maybe I’ve missed something here, but still not seeing how, or if, you can “List posts as sidebar links.” I’m trying to feature links to a few of my older blog posts in the sidebar, similar to what I’ve been able to easily do on blogspot http://mikeforanpr.blogspot.com/
Wondering if this is possible to do on WordPress?

No I’m sorry but we do not have the same/similar widget here and the widget you use on your blogspot blog cannot be used on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. You can post an RSS widget for each site you wish to feature in your sidebar but there will be no images.
