Lists

Please please please will you restore functionality to Lists. We use it in an educational setting and it’s been a critical part of our process for several years. Removing Lists has forced us to move to Microsoft Teams, which has been terrible. PLEASE restore functionality.

What is the URL of your site?

Thanks for replying! The URL is https://kendalcollegefilm.wordpress.com/ but I have no lists running at the moment.

For years my students have used WordPress as an online journal for their work. Teachers use the Reader to review that work and provide feedback as blog comments. When we’re dealing with multiple classes, it becomes difficult to separate and navigate the mountain of work involved. The Lists function offered a simple, effective and easy way to group the students by class. I simply bookmarked each List, and when I was ready to do a batch of assessment, I could sit down and work my through it.

I don’t understand why it’s been removed — I’m assuming a general lack of engagement from WordPress users made it seem like a redundant feature, but it was invaluable to us.

    Thanks,

    simon

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for that additional information.

Lists and unordered lists have not been removed.

Please see this guide on how to use them here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/list-block/

Are you able to provide an example of a previous list created? Perhaps we can offer some insights?

    Many thanks in advance.

Thanks, but I’m not talking about writing lists in a post — I’m talking about the Lists function in the Reader, which previously allowed users to curate bespoke lists of blogs, which is why I want it.

According to WordPress support, ‘new reader lists are not available’ (https://wordpress.com/support/reader-lists/) — I’d love to see this function restored.

I’m afraid I don’t have a sample list to show you — I deleted my previous lists once my students finished the course and I no longer needed to read their blogs.

Sorry, I do have a functioning list — here: https://wordpress.com/read/list/kendalcollegefilm/l3-film-yr1

What we’ve lost is the ability to create new lists.

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for that feedback, it’s very much appreciated.

Currently, reader lists is under going some changes, so it’s likely to return in one shape or another.

In the meantime, are you able to offer more context as to how you use the reader lists, perhaps we can offer some insights or a workaround.

    Many thanks in advance.

Thank you! What I need is a way to combine multiple blogs in one place, and to then be able to read those accumulated blog posts, and to comment on posts as required. Essentially exactly what Lists used to do.

Let’s say I have three classes. Each class has 20 students, and each student runs a blog to host their coursework. I want to be able to bookmark a link to Class 1 and read through their collected work, leaving comments as appropriate — then go to Class 2, then Class 3, and so on. WordPress Lists allowed me to focus on a specific class, but all in one place — without having to go to individual blogs, which takes much longer to administrate and manage. Taking this example further, if I bookmark individual blogs, that’s 60 bookmarks, and I might waste time going into blogs where no work had been completed — whereas with Lists, I would have three bookmarks, and only ever see the work which had been submitted.

If you can suggest any workaround that replicates the functionality of Lists, I’d love to see it — thank you!

There isn’t a way to replicate this functionality in the WordPress.com Reader currently, however you can use any other feed reader that allows you to organize your feeds by a folder or by category and then you can add the RSS feed for each student’s site to the category you want to use for each course.

You can read how to get the RSS feed for WordPress.com sites here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/feeds/

The only thing you’ll need to do in your RSS feed reader will be to click through to the actual page in order to leave a comment. But at least you’ll be able to check one category per class and be able to see if the individual blog has an update from the feed reader.

I hope that helps in the meantime! I don’t have an ETA as to when our own Reader Lists will be updated, but I also used them quite a bit, so I hope to see that updated sooner rather than later. :)

Let us know if you have any questions or need help with anything else.
