On my profile, I have not stated where I live but recently I noticed a blog with a Live Traffic Feed. The traffic feed said where i was from, down to which city i live in. My question is why?
Since i havent posted that on my profile how come it shows up, and can i do anything about it?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

They’re not getting that from your blog: they’re getting that from the IP of your computer at the moment you’re looking at their blog. For what it’s worth, it doesn’t uniquely identify you; it could be anyone in that general area.

<blockqquote>I noticed a blog with a Live Traffic Feed. The traffic feed said where i was from, down to which city i live in. My question is why?I use such a live traffic feed to determine what the demographics are for my blog. I want to know which countries my readers are coming from so I can do a good job of presenting the information in my posts in a manner that’s accessible to all. Also by using a live traffic feed I can see exactly which posts are being read. Lastly, as raincoaster notes above your computer’s IP does not uniquely identify you. I live on a small island and the location provided by the live feed is the location of my ISP (internet service provider) it’s not where I live at all.

ok, I understand, so there is no way for me to control which information the traffic feed gives about me? I mean which country is fine, but what if i don’t want my home city to show?
But i have to say though…it’s quite a clever thing really.

wait…never mind that..i just read the first respons i got so never mind:)
Different question…does that mean that if i’m in England at the time when i read your blog, your traffic feed would say England, london for instance? -
It means that the Internet Service Provider’s location for the IP block your computer is in will be what’s displayed. In my case it shows Vancouver, White Rock, Victoria, Parksville, etc. or sometimes other location of Vancouver Island , but I don’t live in any of those locations it’s simply where the connection is that’s all.

I see, thanks:)
I also found something interesting while reeding about traffic feeds in anothe thread.

it says something about putting the feed in a bookmark…i don’t understand it at all, could anyone explain to me? -
Why not ask the person who made the comment to explain? Click the username link and visit the blog and ask.
Meterics are running on every site you visit on the internet and those metric programs do record your IP and your ISP location whether or not your are aware of it or not. Those who use live feeds are not doing anything wrong and those who don’t like actually seeing the metrics displayed can avoid the ones that do display the ISP locations, knowing that every site that has any kind of metrics program is recording the data whether or not it’s displayed.
