Live Writer Beta – downloading template themes?

  • Unknown's avatar

We have enjoyed writing in LiveWriter, and like the preview page where we can review how the blog will eventually look online. I think I can do the same with WordPress by dowloading the “editing theme” but it refuses to do so. It says I can still publish my blog, but I wont know what it will look like, probably a dogs breakfast from the look of my Livespaces blogs that transferred over. Any ideas, am I missing something?
I have read with interest the comments by the other refugees of Livespaces and think Microsoft/ WordPress could have done more to prepare us. Have found the same problems as many others. Two months ago when we started blogging we were doing so well, now a little frustrated. The good thing is that we’re learning while doing, I just don’t want to become an expert…just a blogger.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    On the top menu bar

    View >> Refresh Theme

LiveWriter will then go to your blog and get the Theme info – it will publish a test Post and then delete it, so if you have subscribers they will get an email and the link will have been deleted or broken.

Hi, if you are using LiveWriter Beta (the 2011 version I believe), this command appears to be under Blog Account->Update theme.

    Well, same problem here.

This is the error message I got from Live Writer after clicking Blog Account->Update theme and waiting for about ten minutes with a green progress bar appearing to be doing something:

“The blog theme couldn’t be downloaded.

You will be able to post to this blog, but you won’t ne able to see the blog theme while editing posts.”

Did you update WLW with your WP.com account or is it still set up to publish to your live space blog ? because if so WLW will not have access to your WP.com theme template…

Also if your WLW is set up with your WP.com account it’s best to be signed into your WP.com blog through WLW before you try to update the theme template… This way WLW has back end access to your WP.com dashboard and can retrieve your blogs theme CSS files
    TIP
I have also found out by trail and error if you write a test post then publish it to your WP.com blog then go to update theme template WLW usually has no problems with downloading the theme template Then I just go back and delete the test post after the theme template downloads within WLW…

Im using WLW 2011 and I have exactly the same problem of downloading thems from wordpress. I tried to follow the tips above but nothing different happened. Therefore, I doubt it is either the problem of WLW or WP in terms of compatiblity. I do wish someone would comp up to us users and get the problem fixed as soon as possible.

I moved to WP soon after I heard the news that Space would be gone next year and it is with the goodwill that WP is a more professional website that I decided to switch to this new place. However, the problem has been on for almost 1 month with no solutions. I am sincerely looking forward to hearing from the team on this issue.

Have you tried the solution in the post immediately above yours?

WLW has always been finicky about theme CSS from the very beginning. When I was playing with it on my PC laptop, I was never able to get it to download the theme CSS but once. And then I changed themes and was never able to get it to update the CSS again.

Try what Slik said and see if that works.

One other note, notice the “BETA” designation? The geek definition of beta is “not finished, has bugs.”

Never use beta software for production purposes. Use it for testing and to check out features and such, but NEVER rely on it.
