Livejournal Import Failure

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to import my old Livejournal blog to a new home on WordPress. I go to the Import Tool and find the Livejournal importer, fill in my username and password, select a password for my protected entries. Every time I do this, it tells me that my username or password are incorrect and to try again. I have double and triple checked that the name and password are correct, and that it is the same information that successfully logs me on on LJ. What could be going wrong?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Go to this page and be sure the email address is correct https://wordpress.com/me/account

For livejournal you have to use their API.

Thank you for the advice, I checked and made sure that my email is correct. I have been trying the importer on WordPress, does it not work anymore? The Livejournal exporter only goes a month at a time, which is not ideal.

  • Hi there,

The LiveJournal importer has been broken for some time – they no longer allow us to connect to them to fetch your content from there. There are several services that used to be able to import content from LJ that now no longer work.

Until LJ fixes their API so we can connect to them again, there is nothing we can do.

Another WordPress.com user was able to create a converter that you can use to convert a LJ export file so it can be imported on WordPress.com instead. You can find information on that workaround here:

But import Livejournal to Dreamwidth still working, using the same LJ API.

  • @rudiecast

LJ has two APIs. Do you know which one Dreamwidth is using? The REST API or the XMLRPC one?

If Dreamwidth offers a WordPress-compatible export file, which would make them another workaround for getting LJ sites imported here.

All the services we know of that don’t work any more, including the WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress importers, use the XMLRPC API, and we’re not able to get a password authenticated to connect to LJ sites. We had reached out to LJ support to try and get this fixed as well, but they sent us just a form response that did not contain anything useful.

The REST API might very well work, but that API works via a plaintext request, meaning your actual password is being sent over the net with no encryption at all. We’re not going to implement any importer using such an insecure method on WordPress.com

    @kokkieh

Thank you for fast response! How about import from DW? Right now many LJ users looking for the other platform and most of them have a mirror on DW. It is a really problem now.

  • We don’t have an importer for Dreamwidth. You can check if there’s a plugin available for self-hosted WordPress to import from them and then set up a temporary self-hosted site via a service like http://poopy.life/ (that’s a real domain), import it there, and export a WordPress export file you can then import here.

Or if Dreamwidth offers a XML export file you can try importing it here directly. However, be aware it might not work – LJ’s XML export file cannot be imported here as it doesn’t use the correct structure, which is what prompted the user in the other thread I linked to to create his own converter to make this possible. Currently that is the only option I know of that works.

    Having the same issue.

I can easily import my Livejournal to Dreamwidth which indicates that the LJ API works. But any attempt of importing the same Livejournal blog to the WordPress platform fails.

This looks like an error on the WordPress side.

I am currently desperately trying to port LJ over to one of my blogs on here too. I just can’t deal with only doing an XML export a month at a time. There’s years and years worth of posts, not all months have posts.. it’s going to be a nightmare to find them all and tell the exporter the right dates.

I am sorry but we cannot help you.

  • @365daysofnoms

I realise this is frustrating, but LJ’s API no longer allows us to connect to them to import content from them. There are several services that have this same problem. We reported the issue to LJ support, but just got back a canned response from them that made it clear they didn’t even try to investigate the issue on their end, so our hands are tied.

I’ve heard that imports to Dreamwidth works. Dreamwidth is created by the same people who originally started LJ, so they probably know a few tricks we don’t. That’s the only service I know of that at the moment can successfully export content from LJ, so perhaps that is an option you could consider.
