Livejournal Import says complete but NONE of the posts show up in "All Posts"

  • Unknown's avatar

my posts won’t import from Livejournal. I have three LiveJournal accounts – the first one imported successfully, but the latter two went through the import process, the WP toll says that they completed successfully (including successes on comments and rethreading), but took almost no time and NONE of the posts appear anywhere I can find them in my admin dashboard. Help? The first LJ had 842 posts in it, is that a possible cause? Is there an upper limit on the number of posts you can have in a WordPress site?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    You’re welcome.

I see 49 posts that are marked Private and 4 in the trash. Can you confirm that these are not the posts in question?

Also, are all of your livejournals public? Are the ones you are having difficulty with private?

  • Unknown's avatar

Indeed, these are not the posts in question. Those posts are from the first LJ I imported.

I’m missing at least a few hundred from the second LJ, and probably about 50-100 from the third LJ. Most of the posts would not be marked as “private” but as “friends only” on LJ (which, on the LJ that imported successfully, translated to “password protected” because I specified a password).

You might try changing the setting on LJ to public just long enough to perform the import (and then change it back immediately) and see if that works. My guess is that your privacy settings are preventing our importer from grabbing the content.

If that doesn’t work, please let me know.

The journals themselves are public. Some of the entries on these journals are marked “friends only” – but looking through the entries, most of them are “public” and not even the “public” entries are being imported. I looked through all the possible settings I can find on LJ, and none of them are anything but “public” already…

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, thanks for checking on that. I’m going to have to look into this further for you. I’m not going to promise we can get all of your posts, as LiveJournal sites don’t apparently always import cleanly, but I’ll see what I can do for you.

Do you mind sharing the source URLs for your LJ sites with me here? If not, I would be happy to send you an email so you can share them privately.

I think what is happening is that some flag saying that all the posts have been imported already on the first blog is set to completed, preventing any further posts from being downloaded. The tool says all the posts on the second and third LJ’s are already downloaded before it even starts downloading them.

I think the answer to this is for me to start a new blog under my username on WP, import the posts from the second LJ there, in order to then import them into the first WP blog, then delete the second WP blog, and repeat for the third LJ. Unless there’s something against doing that in the ToS’s?

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s actually a good idea, if you wouldn’t mind trying that. Please let me know how it goes, and please do not delete any of the blogs. The results of this experiment might be helpful if we need to troubleshoot the importer further.

You can set your “temporary” blogs to private so they don’t show up anywhere, but both you and I will be able to see if the posts came through or not.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh shoot, I already deleted the first temporary blog. I’ll repeat that one. The second one went through. I’m importing the info from the first temporary blog but the import is not yet complete.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Please keep me posted. :)

The temporary journals are still there (the two with default settings besides my primary journal venuscallipyge.wordpress.com) and the workaround worked out great. Let me know when you’re done checking out the temporary blogs and I’ll delete them then. Thanks for trying to help, hope the problem was educational at the least now I’ve found a way around it. Thank you!

To confirm: when you imported your LiveJournals into their own blogs, everything worked out okay? Have you subsequently imported those WordPress.com blogs into your primary blog? Do you still need any assistance with this or were you able to take care of everything?

It was also educational for me, as I haven’t assisted someone trying to import several LJ sites into a single WordPress.com blog before. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes and yes. I now have the more than 1,000 entries all in my main journal. Like I said earlier, there is probably a flag in your system that says all LJ entries were imported that doesn’t discern which LJ is completed or that doesn’t get reset after the LJ import is complete. At least that’s what it looks like based on the database behavior through the application layer on my end.

I’m all done, please let me know when you no longer need the temporary blogs so I can delete them. Thanks for trying to help, your service to the community is much appreciated!

I’m glad importing the LiveJournals into temporary blogs worked for you. If all of your posts are showing up in your primary blog now, you can delete the other blogs (or set them to private if they are using addresses you may wish to use again.)

Thanks for testing and letting me know. Please check your email for another update.
