loading data onto pages and/or categories
-
Dear Happiness Engineer,
My aim is to have a website for an artist. I am stuck. Here are some of my problems:
1. I have made a custom menu, but don’t know how to put pictures and data “in” there.
2. I have made the “Paintings”-section a Category with sub-categories (2014, 2013 etc.), but don’t know whether it should rather have been pages. Once again, how do I get my pictures and info on the page?
3. My theme (Hatch) shows lots of pictures on its front page. How do I get there?
4. I am aiming to do a similar site than this one: http://www.andrewsalgado.com. Is it possible through what I have available here at WordPress? (I am at http://www.munromunromunro.com)Kind regards,
Janine. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Janine,
If you’re just getting started at WordPress.com, I’d recommend taking a look first at our Learn WordPress.com tutorial here: http://learn.wordpress.com/
That will give you an overview of how to work with your new site, and might put some of my tips below into more context.
1. I have made a custom menu, but don’t know how to put pictures and data “in” there.
The best way to get started is by creating the content for your website first, and then setting up the custom menu with all the pieces you’ve created. To get started, you can go to your My Sites page.
Under your website’s title there, you can click on “Posts” (for blog posts) or “Pages” (for regular pages). Then, you can click on “New Post” or “New Page” to create a new one.
In the new post or page you create, you can add in the content: pictures, text, anything you want to have on that post or page on your site. For example, you can create a page with the title “About” and add information about yourself. Then, you can go to your custom menu and add that “About” page to the menu.
2. I have made the “Paintings”-section a Category with sub-categories (2014, 2013 etc.), but don’t know whether it should rather have been pages. Once again, how do I get my pictures and info on the page?
If you’d like to have a single page with all of your paintings from 2014 on it, you can create that as a new page. Then, you can add that page to your custom menu.
On the other hand, if you’d like you can set it up so that each painting from 2014 is posted in its own blog post. Then, you can add the category “2014” to each blog post and it will show up on that 2014 category page you set up.
Either way will work (and will create a different sort of look on your site) but you’ll need to create the post or page first to add your content there.
3. My theme (Hatch) shows lots of pictures on its front page. How do I get there?
You can find instructions for setting up the Hatch theme here: https://wordpress.com/themes/hatch/
It’s designed to work with a blog-style site, so each image comes from an individual blog post that has a Featured Image on it. You can do that by creating a new post as I mentioned above.
4. I am aiming to do a similar site than this one: http://www.andrewsalgado.com. Is it possible through what I have available here at WordPress?
That site doesn’t use WordPress, so yours won’t end up exactly like that one, but it’s possible to set up a website and customize how it looks. I’d recommend starting by creating some posts and pages to get your website’s content out there. Once that content is there, it will be easier to see your options for changing the look of the site with different themes and customizations.
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)
