loading the backup

  the backup is from wordpress.org and with extension tar.gz. how do I get it into the correct format so wordpress.com will import the site

  Hi there! Does your backup include the full database, and site files and plugins, or does it only contain an XML file?

  If the backup includes site database, files, themes, and plugins, then you’d want the Business plan to take advantage of things like adding plugins to your site here on WordPress.com, accessing the site files via SFTP, using phpMyAdmin to access and manage the database, and more.   If your exported backup .tar.gz contains only an XML file, I would suggest extracting the XML from that archive file, so you can import it using this method:
