local server

Hello. I need to edit my sit on a local server. It took me the entire day to finally install WordPress on a local server. I was able to migrate and import my site. As soon as it is imported I am taken to the dashboard where it makes me sign into the account. I enter in the passwords that I just created but it doesn’t recognize anything. This happened twice— after the first time I started from scratch.
My question is— do I disregard the new password and ‘test site’ name that I created on my database and login with my regular credentials? That worries me. Will that change the live site?
