Local Tags and Search Engines (I would like to pay for this feature)
-
I have found that if I want my tags to only link to posts on my site, I need to change the privacy option to block search engines from viewing my site. robots.txt contains User-agent: * Disallow: /
Our blog is for our mountain bike club, and if I have some tags “races”, “club rides”, I does not make sense when a visitor clicks on the “races” tag, that the visitor is taken to see all blog entries on wordpress.com that have been tagged with “races”.
I would like the option to be able to PAY to have only local tags, and to have a robots.txt that does not block search engines.
What price do other people think would be fair for this feature?
$10, $20?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I can’t see WP.com letting it go for that little. The global tags are a huge source of community connections for them, and you can already get local tags for a blog by hosting it yourself and using software from WP.ORG.

You don’t have to be an IT specialist to use wordpress.org. I thought so, too, but for all practical purposes, it’s (almost) as easy as using wordpress.com. If that is not an option, using the wordpress.com CSS upgrade, you can make the global tags and categories not display, but then you will have to manually add the links to your tags and categories in every post. In essence, wordpress.com is free, and usually, when things are free, there are always some limitations. You can try to work your way around, or you have to make do with it. What you can do is make your tags and categories so unique that only your post show up in the global list:, e.g. don’t use a broad tag like ‘races’, use the name of the race, or the place, because that is most likely what people will search for in Google anyway. The Google search refers to the global tag list, which has a very strong position in Google or other search engines, as you will discover, and that list then shows only your posts. That way both the visitors already on your blog, and potential new visitors can find you. It’s all about tweaking wordpress.com for what is possible. There’s no need to pay extra.
