Location and colour of social media icons – Balasana

  • Unknown's avatar

    1. I would like the social media icons to appear in the header section as well as the menu headings. I have been through every step suggested on this page (https://wordpress.com/theme/balasana/roguefencingmelbourne.com.au) with no success. This page says “With Balasana, you have the option to display links to your social media accounts in the header, right below the main site navigation.”. This is exactly what I want, however I cannot get the theme to do this in the header. The only way I can get it to work is by putting the icons in the footer.

When I do activate the social menu on the header, the main menu disappears and the words ‘Facebook’ and Instagram’ appear – not the icons, as I want. I have followed the video step-by-step, however it’s not working.

    2. My workaround at the moment is putting the social media icons as a block on the homepage. I need to change the colour of both the pink and blue social media icons – more in line with my red branding.

I’m on the Premium plan so can change the CSS. I have looked at every topic on the forum about changing colours and tried every CSS suggested with no success!

I’m having the same issue with the Stow theme. The social media icons menu bar that is normally below the primary menu in the header has disappeared.

From the above post, this is happening with my site as well – “When I do activate the social menu on the header, the main menu disappears and the words ‘Facebook’ and Instagram’ appear – not the icons, as I want.”

  • Hi there,

    1) I want to verify this because it confused me when I first tried to add social media links, but unlike most of the updates you see automatically within customizer (i.e., when adding the social media icons in the header causing the main menu to disappear), the social media icons will not show up in your header until after you save. Have you tried saving the change to see if the icons pop up? It is demonstrated at the very end of the tutorial video:

Let me know and we’ll go from there.

    Thanks,

  • Hi there,

I have an update for both of you. We spoke to the developers of both the Stow and Balasana themes, and there was indeed a bug from our last update on these themes that caused the social media menu to not work properly. The developers are currently working on a fix and we’ll make sure to keep you all updated on the progress. Thank you both for reporting!

Thanks so much for the update. Please do let us know when it is fixed.

Thank you for the update! Will keep an eye out here for when it’s done.

    cheers

  • It looks like Stow is fixed now, as they were aware of that one before we reported it. And they’re working on Balasana now, too. We’ll update you when we have more info.

  • Regarding Balasana, we’re not sure that one is supposed to have a social media menu in the header (the demo does not) so this one may not be a bug so much as an issue with the documentation. Just so you have a heads up on that.

If you like the layout of Balasana below the header but prefer a different theme’s header, you can copy the content of your page layout over to a new theme if you’d like. Let us know if you need help with that.

And we will also update you when we hear more re: Balasana’s social menu.

Hi there – this sounds like a bit of an issue to me! I’ve tried many themes and settled on this one and spent ages on it. It’s also designed for a yoga studio or similar – these kinds of businesses need their socials absolutely front and centre (ie in the header). So much of what we’re doing happens on our socials – it’s part of our strategy! If you looks at what I’ve currently done with the social links on my website, it’s not that great. https://roguefencingmelbourne.com.au/ If you see my original post, I can’t fix the colours either.

I selected this theme (and spent a lot of time selecting it) because I read the documentation page first, saw I could do what I wanted, and chose it on this basis. You’ll see there’s not only text about this but a whole video explainer!

I’m really reluctant to switch to another theme now – it’s quite a new site and I don’t really have the time to make another one work. Can you send me links to some themes that are almost similar? Will it make all the text and colours and formatting disappear?

Is there any other help you can offer me in this instance?

    Thank you

  • Hi there,

I selected this theme (and spent a lot of time selecting it) because I read the documentation page first, saw I could do what I wanted, and chose it on this basis. You’ll see there’s not only text about this but a whole video explainer!

Apologies with that. We checked with our themes team, and it seems the text was added in error. The Balsana theme has never had the ability to show social icons in the header area (which is why they do not appear in the demo site) even though it said this in the text.

We’re working on getting the discription updated, but it does not sound like this theme is a good fit for you, considering it will not have social menus in the header.

I’m really reluctant to switch to another theme now – it’s quite a new site and I don’t really have the time to make another one work. Can you send me links to some themes that are almost similar? Will it make all the text and colours and formatting disappear?

Actually, this is less work than you would imagine. The way our block editor works, your current page layout will translate to a new theme with almost no changes. Additionally you can “try” a theme out with your content before you commit, so you can assess what changes would look like.

This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to look at a theme demo, then switch to demoing the theme with your content.

You can view the at this link: https://d.pr/v/lXqGcU

From that video you can see this would allow you to pick a theme that has social icons in the header, and have almost no other changes. At most you may need to set your logo again, and possibly a few other small changes.

From my video, this is the theme I previewed, which seems like a nice alternative to Balsana: https://wordpress.com/theme/alves/roguefencingmelbourne.com.au

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

OK, thank you for taking the time to respond and record a video. I will check that out when I have time and see what works best.

Hi there, I found the time to experiment with different themes (following the directions set up in your video) and I was a disaster. I played around with the Maywood theme a bit, using the screen you suggested (it showed up all the Rogue content very well) – then pressed ‘activate theme’ and the live version used my header and menu, but inserted all the Maywood sample content!

It’s taken me ages just to get it back to where it was – I went back to Balasana, and it went back to that theme, but still with the sample Maywood homepage content.

Is there an easier way to do this please? According to your backend, everything looked in place, however once activate was pressed it just randomly inserted content that wasn’t in the backend.

  • You’ll be able to delete the sample page provided via https://wordpress.com/support/pages/edit-pages-screen/

As for the menus, it is possible you may need to re-assign menus after a theme switch: https://wordpress.com/support/menus/

The theme may add some new menus, but it won’t delete your old menu. It would just be a matter of “I want this one to appear there instead.”
