LOCKED OUT OF MY BLOG BY WORDPRESS!

  • Unknown's avatar

Forgive the upper case, but I just can’t believe what has happened.

My custom domain name — which has NOT been set as my primary domain for ages, has just expired. I did email support, as instructed, to say that I wanted it deleted, but I get continuously redireded to this message that it has expired, and cannot access my dashboard. The only way I can see my blog is logged out.

I’ve messaged support again on this, but this just cannot be. It’s totally outrageous to have a system in place that works like this,

I love WordPress, but tis makes me fell like deleting my blog the moment they let me back in.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m unclear on what you want. You want to delete your blog? Or you want to delete your custom domain name?

http://andrewgould.wordpress.com/wp-admin will not allow you to see the dashboard?

If you messaged support, give them till Monday to get on it. It’s a holiday weekend.

    Thank you for replying.

Actually, I didn’t think I was going to have to ask to delete anything. As my custom domain name was set to expire on the 10th of this month. As I said, I haven’t even used it for al long time.

And no, if I go to that link you’ve placed above, it shows my dashboard in its normal state for a few seconds, and then defaults to the Domains section with this message:

“You were redirected here because your blog uses a domain subscription that has expired”

Right there, it shows andrewgould.wordpress.com selected as my primary name.

I can click and click, but it comes back to this page. This is crazy!

I messaged support, saying it was urgent, but they have not replied yet.

Try the Cookie Dance: Log out, clear browser cache and cookies, and restart your computer. Go directly to that link above and log in. That MIGHT get you past it.

Thanks once again for the suggestion, but it makes no difference.

I cleaned out all temporary files and cookies with a registry cleaner, and restarted, but it’s still the same.

    Can you believe this???

  • We use that message to make it really clear that a domain is about to or has expired, because once a domain goes out of the grace period, it’s super-expensive or even impossible for you to get it back.

I see that one of my coworkers has deleted that domain from your account for you in response to your request. Thanks for your patience while we got to you.

It’s many hours later, next day now, and I can get back in and use all the features of my dashboard, but I have no idea how many hours WordPress had me locked out of it.

I find this practice of WordPress totally unacceptable. Over the last weeks, I’ve received quite a few emails, warning me that my custom domain name was about to expire, and there was a constant message to this effect at the top in my dashboard.

It’s not just that these mesages should have been enough, but tell me how not allowing me to post, etc, and only allowing me to see my blog logged out benefitted me, in this case?

All this did was to cause me stress. WordPress needs to stop subjecting users to this treatment.

The first time I clicked last night to try and get out of that renewal message, I emailed support, saying I wanted to delete my custom domain name, because that’s what I was instructed to do. I sent a very simple, short message, because at that time, I thought that this being locked out was just a momentary occurrance.

I see now that an email response from support arrived about five later. This was just a simple acknowledgement of my request. Nothiing was said of my subsequent message, titled “URGENT….”, where I implored support to fix the problem quickly.

I’ve also has no answer so for to another message I sent them, almost a day ago. That was the one with important questions about transfering the custom domain name I use with my photography gallery site over to this blog.

How long should one normally expect to wait for a response from support? At present, I can’t get on and make important decisions about the use I’m going to make of my gallery site versus my WordPress blog without this answer.

Finally, I must say to you, Markel, that although I do appreciate your response here, I have NOT beenn feeling very patient at all — and could hardly be expected to be under the circumstances.

Give feedback to staff via the Help button on your dashboard. The chances they’ll read it otherwise are probably 1/1000.

Maybe you should look into hosting your own site if this very brief lapse of access to your free hosted blog caused you this much distress!

    Thanks, Raincoaster.
And yes, I’ve already done that. I’ve now lost count of the messages I’ve asked them what the justification can be for proceeding in this manner, and asked for this to be passed on to management. I will report back here, as a matter of interest, when I hear back from them — which I certainly hope I will.

To anyone who reads this… I’m not just “having a nag” here, I assure you. Think of it this way.

I’m a serious non professional photographer, who is just starting to get into things, with the sale on some photos to leading travel guide publishers. My blog is important to me, as is my gallery site. I don’t want to be locked out of it for even a second.

I speak of photographers here, as that’s the area I’m conversant with. Some of the top photographers in the world have WordPress.com blogs. I don’t think they’d take very kindly to this happening to them, and I think WordPress should be worried about it.

    OK… I’ll say no more…

    To Manninglee.

I’m a photographer and not a CSS code and HTML expert. I don’t want to get into that.
I wrote my response to Raincoaster before seeing your input here. As I say there, it’s good enough for top professionals to be on here, and I feel — apart from this — that it’s a privilege to be on WordPress.com, so don’t get me wrong…

Sorry, I’m a bit late with this, but just wanted to say that WordPress have contacted me, and said they will discuss this matter and reply to me. When the latter happens, I’ll return here.
