Lodestar Menu Issue
-
Hi,
I am using Lodestar and have noticed that my (very extensive) menu does not fold on tablets and phones. Neither does it seem to fold in the menu widget. How can I resolve this issue?

Hi @cachgermany ,
I’d be happy to help! Could you tell us the site URL you are having trouble with?
-
Hi @musicsuzuranbbc,
Thank you for your reply
It is this site: http://www.lionpetting.com
The site is in private mode until its scheduled launch next week.
Can you please send me a join request, so I can give you access? As mentioned, the problem arises only on phones and tablets.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi @cachgermany ,
No worries. I’ve gone and requested an invite. Let me know when you see it.
Also, could you let me know whether you have the free plan or a paid plan? If you have, say, the Premium Plan, you would have CSS customization enabled, which might (or might not) help with the problem. If you are on the Free Plan, I will see what we can do within those limitations.
Cheers!

Hi musicsuzuranbbc,
You have access now!
I do have a premium plan, however no experience at all with css…..Thank you so much!

Hi again, @cachgermany . Thanks for giving me access. I have successfully viewed your site!
Now, I checked your site on a few platforms and it seems to me that your theme is behaving as it is designed to. On a large desktop screen, your menu shows 8 top-level pages. Each of these has a drop-down menu that appears when you hover your mouse over it. On a mobile, or even in a small desktop window, this menu is condensed to a simple “MENU” button with three lines before it. When you click this, it gives you an extensive list with all the pages in your menu. The 8 top-level pages are left-aligned and each of their sub-pages are shown underneath them indented.
So, this is what I am seeing. I first want to confirm this is what you are seeing, too. If you are seeing something else, then the problem could be a local problem with your device. Deleting your browser’s cache may solve the issue.
Clearing Your Browser CacheOn the other hand, if this is what you are seeing, and yet it isn’t what you are after, then I think the quickest solution will be to change themes. In your first forum post, you mentioned…
my (very extensive) menu does not fold on tablets and phones. Neither does it seem to fold in the menu widget.
Are you looking so that, when your user clicks on the menu button on their phone, they are initially shown just the top 8 pages and then clicking one of those pages shows the sub-pages underneath them? If so, I’m not sure that there is a theme that supports that.
What you could do is only include the current top-level pages in your menu. These pages could lead users to a navigation page that includes a link to all the other sub-pages you currently have in your menu, but only those relevant to the top-level page/language they have selected. However, this would remove the subpages from the menu and would mean users would have to travel back to the navigation page each time when moving to another page.
Another thing you could do is create a separate site for each of the other languages you want to show and have a language menu to switch between languages/sites. The following support document gives a few examples as to how to set up multilingual sites. You might find the example sites at the bottom of the page interesting. If you pay attention to their URLs, you will notice, clicking on the language link in each of these sites actually takes the user to a new site. However, they have set up their sites so that this transition is seamless.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/set-up-a-multilingual-blog/I know that is a whole lot of information. Feel free to let me know if I have misunderstood something or you still have any questions. :)
One final thing I will point out is, since you have the Premium plan for your site, you are entitled to live-chat or mail support with staff. If you start a chat session, you can have a staff member help you in real time. It will save you time, compared to using this forum. (Not that I personally have a problem helping you here. :) Naturally, staff have access to more resources and would be able to help you better.) You can start your chat session from the following link.

Hi @musicsuzuranbbc,
Thank you for taking your time and giving me several possible solutions.
As you have guessed rightly, I was indeed looking to only show the 8 top-level-pages and hide the subpages until someone clicks on a specific language (just as is possible on pc). I feel that in the current set-up on tablets and phones, people might not want to scroll down and will abort their visit since they obviously would only see German and English at first glance.I had been looking into themes also and have not found one that would support this solution.
The only viable option is probably to create a site for each of the languages. But not sure if I am up to that at the moment since it would be a lot of work :-)
BTW: I approached the Support Chat with this question, but unfortunately, they could not help me either. Sometimes people on the forum have quite creative solutions, so that is why I wound up here :-)
Anyway, thanks again for taking your time and I will now have to decide if I can live with the result or need to set-up different sites !
Wishing you all the best!

Thanks for getting back, @cachgermany !
I see. I understand your situation better. I’m sorry we couldn’t provide a way to do exactly what you are after… I do have one more suggestion which you could consider.
With the Navigation Menu widget, you are able to set when a certain menu becomes visible. So, if you created a separate custom menu for each language and set each to only be visible on the pages of those languages, then you would be able to condense the menu people see in your widget area to only that which is relevant. Unfortunately, this doesn’t resolve the issue you have in the primary menu at the top of the page. But, if you limited the Primary menu at the top of the page to the 8 top-level pages you currently have set (the home page for each language) and then have a menu widget show the subpages for that language in a different part of the window, this would de-clutter the extensive menu you have at the moment. It isn’t exactly what you were looking for initially, but perhaps something closer to it than what I previously mentioned?
If you are interested in doing this, I would be happy to help you set it up. Below are a few tips that will help you get on the right track. Let me know what you think. :)
- You can create multiple menus from “Customizer” > “Menus”. When creating a new menu for the menu widget, skip the check boxes under “Menu Locations” and proceed to select the pages for that menu. Once you are done, you should have 9 menus – one with 8 top-level language pages set to your Primary Menu and 8 language-specific menus with 9 subpages each not set to any menu position.
- From “Customizer” > “Widgets”, select the position you currently have your Navigation Menu widget set to. Here, add 8 separate Navigation Menu widgets, each containing only one of each language-specific menus you created above. With each navigation menu, click “Visibility”. Then select the correct criteria so it says, for example, Show if Page is Background or Show if Page is Cub Petting and Volunteers or … under your English menu, Show if Page is Hintergrund or … for your Deutsch menu etc.

Hi @musicsuzuranbbc,
Sorry for the late reply, but I have been ill. Will look into this, as soon as I get better.

Absolutely no problem, @cachgermany ! You must be launching your site, soon. Rest up and feel free to comment back here when you get the time. :)
