Lodestar theme not showing header image correctly on mobile/tablet

Hey everyone. Have a weird problem with the Lodestar theme.

I am trying to setup two simple sites, Farkonas.com and Farkonas.eu.

I have successfully customized the former and it looks great on all devices, but the latter’s header image shows incorrectly on mobiles or tablets: Lodestar just shows *the whole image* of the header without resizing it to fit the screen… it’s so it scrolls and scrolls and scrolls and, well, it spoils the whole “all sections on the homepage” effect.

Problem is, as far as I can tell I’m using ***the exact same settings*** on both sites. Lodestar works on Farkonas.com, does not on Farkonas.eu. Have not tinkered with CSS in either site. Any ideas? What should I look for?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The mobile ready theme is a default theme and a completely different theme that you do not need to enable, if your theme is listed as a responsive layout theme here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-layout/

The mobile default theme is provided for those who run older themes that aren’t the gold standard which is responsive layout.

A responsive layout theme adapts to different screen sizes so that your website will work (and be optimized for) iPhones, iPads, Android and other mobile devices. When responsive width themes are viewed on mobiles sidebars appear below the posts in order to provide as much space as possible for reading.

When we use a responsive theme we disable the mobile theme. Go to >Dashboard > Appearance > Mobile and disable the mobile theme

    http:/NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=mobile-options

    * Replace NAME_OF_BLOG withe the actual name of your blog in that URL.

You can read more in the support docs at https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/mobile-themes/

You can test your site at this link https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/

If none of that is helpful then I apologize and advise you to seek Staff help. Please post this specific info here:
    (a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.

Hi, thank you for the answer.

I had indeed made sure that was the “mobile” option was deactivated – in Lodestar’s case I think it was already deactivated by default. It’s responsive by design.

In any case I already know Lodestar works great, because Farkonas.com works as intended. I just cannot figure out what’s different in Farkonas.eu (they even use the same structure, text and images).

I have tested Farkonas.eu with iPhone 7 and iPad Pro (both iOS 10), with Google Chrome and Safari (latest versions).

Hold the presses, please. Only difference between Farkonas.eu and Farkonas.com is that I pay a yearly subscription to map the latter domain onto farkonas.wordpress.com.

In the former’s case I have not done so. The site looks correct if I hit farkonaseu.wordpress.com and not http://www.farkonas.eu (I have redirected the domain from my registration service to farkonaseu.wordpress.com). Should the header of the site be affected by that…?!?!

On top of all that, weirdly enough http://www.farkonas.eu works correctly on an Android phone (version 6.0) with Google Chrome. Does this have to do with security certificates of the web address redirect that iPhone/iPad does not accept?

  • Hi –

Thank you for sharing all of these details. Could you possible capture a screen shot of the affected site version? The screen shot can be uploaded to your media library on the .eu site. Let me know once you’ve done that and I will take a look.

Hey – quick one to let you know exactly what is happening with this, maybe you can make a small adjustment to the theme, as it truly is excellent for its purpose, at some point.

Farkonas.com has domain parking with WordPress, so when you hit http://www.farkonas.com, the URL remains intact on the address bar.

Farkonas.eu does not (will upgrade both to the personal plan in the next few weeks). I have registered the domain with another registration service and, as many do, it gave me the option of forwarding Farkonas.eu to farkonaseu.wordpress.com.

Thing is, there are two options available in domain forwarding. The standard option works with every browser and OS but it does not change the URL showing in the address bar. The “frame forward” option does keep the URL intact (effectively presenting a whole website in a “virtual frame”) but if I use that option, Lodestar does not present the header image of the theme correctly on Apple devices.

On Android devices, it does. But wanting to maintain maximum compatibility with all devices, I switched to the “standard” option and now Farkonas.eu works as intended, even if the URL showing is of course farkonaseu.wordpress.com.

I considered the matter resolved and that is why I marked it accordingly, but if you update the Lodestar theme at some point in the future you may want to explore how difficult (or not) it would be to make the feature photo show correctly even if the whole site is in another frame. It’s not a “bug”, but it could make life easier for some people.

Keep up the good work, thank you!

P.S. The exact same thing happens with the Twenty Seventeen theme, which I also tried to use in the same way before switching back to Lodestar. Just saying. :-)
