Can you add a widget where someone has to log in to see your site?

You can set your site to Private via Settings -> Privacy in your Dashboard.

Yeah, but would they need a password to get into our blog?

If you set your blog to private, then your visitors would have to have a wordpress.COM account (they do not have to have or get a blog) and then you would need to add them to your user list under settings > privacy. You can add up to 35 users for free. If you have over that, then you would need to purchase the unlimited users upgrade.

You can also password protect individual posts and pages, but that is less secure since passwords tend to get passed around, and even end up showing up on facebook and twitter, or in comments on other sites.
