Hello, I am new to wordpress. I currently have a private site. I can log into the dashboard, view my stats, do all the behind the scenes stuff but when I try to view my site it won’t let me. I get in this continuous loop where I have to put in my user name/password and authentication but it doesn’t connect. It says ‘this is a private blog and you have to have rights’. Meanwhile it keeps me logged into dashboard. I’m the creator, so I have rights. I used to be able to see it no problem. Then all of a sudden it just stopped. Can anyone help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

It sounds interesting to me. If you are the creator of the site and if you have the admin access, the blog should be accessible to you. I would suggest you to check whether you are using the admin credentials instead of another (probable) account you’ve created on the site.

Did you give anyone admin access?

Please try to remember those stuffs.

    Best of luck

Thank you for your prompt response. Unfortunately, I did not create another account. I just have one. I don’t know, I’m sure it’s my user error. So frustrating because it pretty much disables me from moving forward with this whole thing. Thank you for your time!

    Hi,

If you keep facing this problem and find no solution, you may try to get a WordPress.com staff’s help by adding “modlook” tag in this post’s tag list on the sidebar. It should attract a staff’s attention who can look inside the issue.

    Best of luck.

    Hi Jessica,

I tested your blog on my end and everything appears to be working properly.

    A few questions:

So being unable to log in began to happen right when you made your blog private?

When you visit decodingsimple.com, it does not go straight to your site, but rather your login page?

Have you tried logging in trying both your e-mail and username?

If nothing has worked, I would try to reset your password to see if you can regain access:

    https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword

Let me know if anything works or if you have any quesitons.

    Thanks!

Darnell – Thank you for investigating this issue. Unfortunately, the issue continues to occur. Below are some answers to your questions

    1) When I am on my dashboard I either click ‘my site’ at top left and it takes me to the stats page. I can click on anything here – stats, WP admin, plan, blog post, etc….. EXCEPT ‘view site’. This directs me to a log in screen. I try to login using my username or my email address. Unfortunately, it says it’s a protected blog and I cannot access the site.

    2) I have always had a protected/private site. When I first started I could toggle between dashboard and site no problem. All of a sudden one day it didn’t work. I cannot recall anything I may have done to create this issue.

    3) I tried to reset my password but that did not solve the problem.

Do you have any other suggestions? This is quite frustrating!

    Hi there Jessica,

Hmmm…I logged in under you without issues. I used your username instead of email to log in. I went straight from your dashboard to your site without any problems.

    Have you tried:

    • Cleared your browser’s cache?
    • Tried to log into your account using a different browser?
    • Disabling and re-enabling your privacy settings?

I couldn’t find anything wrong with your site’s settings, so I want to see if any of the above will yield a different result from you.

Please let me know if you have any luck and if you have any questions. We’ll get this sorted out for you.

    Thanks!

Hi Darnell – Thank you for your added assistance. I played around with some things and ended up disabling the ‘two-step authentication’ which, for some reason, seems to be the reason I was unable to access the site.

I also noticed the two step authentication must to have a bug because when I would click ‘remember for 30 days’ it would never remember it. Anyway, it’s interesting that nobody else has had this problem!

Thanks again for your help, I was at the point of throwing in the towel!

    Hi Jessica,

Sorry that you were having issues with two step authentication, although I am happy to hear that you figured out the source of the problem. You’re not the only one who have had issues with two step authentication.

So, you would enter in your username and password for your blog and then the verification code for Two Step Authentication – at which point you receive the this is a private blog and you have to have rights message? I will definitely look into this for you.

We definitely encourage you to have Two Step Authentication on your account for security reasons and don’t want this error to prevent you from having that extra layer of security.

For more information on Two Step Authentication, please visit our support page:

    Enable Two-Step Authentication

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

Hi Darnell – The steps I would take are as follows

    1) enter username/password for blog. Then enter verification code for two step authentication. This would take me to my dashboard.

    2) From the dashboard I would click on ‘my site’ – ‘view site’. This would route me to a log in page where I would have to do step #1. After I entered the verification code it would just clear my username/password from the screen (no pop up would occur). I noted a paragraph on this page stating this is private blog but I can’t remember if that was there to begin with or if it popped up after I tried to access the site. All I know is that it cleared out my info and wouldn’t let me access the site. At this time, I could click back to ‘my site’ on the top left and continue to dashboard. So, I was always logged in but could never view my actual site.

In addition, I also noticed the system is not holding the verification code for 30 days.

    Thanks!
    Jessica

    Hi Jessica,

I did some testing and wanted to see if you can re-enable two step when you have some free time and see if the same issue pops up for you. I want see what happens when you login to the
new editor to view the site: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php
and if there is anything different when you logging into
    wp-admin: https://decodingsimple.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

Were you on a computer or peripheral device? And what browser were you using?

Let me know if you have any questions or if anything changes.

    Thanks!

Hi Darnell – I re-enabled the two step process and was able to successfully access the site.

I was on a MAC computer, using Safari and I was using the Authenticator App on my phone (i.e. not getting a code via SMS).

Please let me know if you need any additional assistance. Thanks for all your help and patience!
