Trying to help someone with their websites.
Someone created them for him and he doesn’t know how to login or even if he was shared in.
So would like to gain access to the sites.
What is the best way to proceed. If you require anything from me or him for this, please let me know and I will get this to you.

Hi there,
I’m not sure what you mean. There’s no way to reply privately to someone in this forum, and I don’t see any email support requests where you’ve contacted us in addition to this thread.
Where exactly did you reply?
If the site in question is hosted here on WordPress.com, the only way we can give anyone access is if they verify ownership of the site via our account recovery process:
https://wordpress.com/en/support/account-recovery/
If the site is using the open source version of WordPress at another hosting provider, you’ll need to contact that hosting provider directly for help with this, as we don’t have any control over sites not hosted on our servers.

I replied to MacManX privately.
The atypical situation is as follows:
Nobody knows anything.
These 2 websites were created for someone. He doesn’t even know if he’s an admin or not, so conventional account recovery may not even be an option. He could be an admin in which case this is quite simple but only wordpress can confirm or deny this.
He wants to (re)gain access to the sites and I’m trying to find out what you need in order for this.
The name of the sites are in his name and if you’d like to contact him directly thats fine; if you want him to produce documentation that he’s the person in question, that’s fine, please just let me know what you need.
Thank you -
As @kokkieh mentioned above, if the site is hosted on WordPress.com, the person you’re helping will need to fill out the Account Recovery form they can find on this page:
https://wordpress.com/en/support/account-recovery/.
There’s no other way to regain access to the account.
-
Are you able to look at the back end of the sites and see which emails have admin access?
This will allow us to see if he is infact an admin. Can he go through the recovery process if he was never an admin? It will also allow us to contact the actual admins and ask them to grant him admin access
-
Without knowing the site address, we can’t do much but, in any case, we’re not able to disclose the email address connected to the account or any other personal information.
-
I can give you the site address but it is possible to let you know privately.
So how do we get around the situation.
A creates a site for B, but B doesn’t know any of the login information. B may not even know the identity of A.
How does B get access to his site in this situation??
I get privacy, personal data and all that but there has to be a way for common sense to prevail and for B to be able to get access to his own site.

Hi @limonapamockup,
At the moment, the only site I see on your account is
ascholdingsmockup.wordpress.com— is this the site that you’re referring to?In general, if you are referring to two separate WordPress.com accounts, here’s how you can grant access to other users: https://wordpress.com/support/user-roles/
The site owner would have to grant access to another administrator.
If your site(s) are hosted on WordPress.org, here’s how to create user accounts: https://wordpress.org/support/article/users-add-new-screen/
Otherwise, please share the URL’s in your reply. We can redact them afterwards.
-
no it’s not the site i’m referring to.
It’s 2 other sites – if you could please redact these i would appreciate it
[redacted]whatever information you can give about who the admin/s is/are and how to contact them, would truly appreciate it!

i see. but aren’t they on a wordpress cms?
this is what we want access to. what would access to hosting help here? -
Your sites are not hosted with WordPress.com. They are using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted elsewhere.
Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/
https://wordpress.org/support/ is a great resource for sites using the open source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
And, they do have some options for you at https://wordpress.org/support/article/resetting-your-password/
Your hosting provider’s support team may also be able to assist.

WordPress is merely free software that can be loaded on sites at numerous different hosts. WordPress.com is just one of many hosts as is Bluehost, GoDaddy etc etc. You’d need to get the owner of the sites to approach GoDaddy with some proof of purchase to get further assistance.
Also note that if the sites use the wordpress software the correct support forum for that is
