Login broken when using Edge (not the Chromium Edge, regular Egde)
-
Hi Team,
When using Edge to sign-in to WordPress.com, the login page is broken. I’m using the regular Egde browser that comes along with Windows 10 PC.(Microsoft Edge 44.20257.1.0, Microsoft EdgeHTML 18.20257).
This was working before and has now stopped working. There are time when I have to use Edge and not having WordPress.com work on that browser is stopping my workflow.
I’m blocked completely. For your developers, these are the two errors I can see in developer tools:
SCRIPT1028: SCRIPT1028: Expected identifier, string or number
457.a79c451517e216055d67.min.js (1,8080)SCRIPT438: SCRIPT438: Object doesn’t support property or method ‘AppBoot’
log-in (37,29317)Hope this is fixed soon.

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you!

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I would like to let you know the below :
1. This issue is with Edge browser, it’s updated via Windows update and is latest (since last year now!)
2. The issue is with your website being updated recently and stopped working in Egde. Not related to cookies/cache or extensions (Egde doesn’t even support extensions!).
And just to be clear, I have checked this again.I would sincerely ask you to please forward this bug to a developer on your web team. There is a technical issue with a script running on your login page that fails on edge.
Thanks

We’ll forward this along to the developers. Do you remember when the issue started?
Also, while I’m not a developer, I tried testing this on my daughter’s Windows 10 laptop and wasn’t even able to download EdgeHTML. It had Edge Chromium installed, though she has always used Firefox. Are you using any special configuration to be able to access that?

I remember verifying the scenario sometime in Sep, but not sure exactly if I was using Edge for something else. I do recall definitely that it was working in April.
For the Edge browser, its complicated right now. I have two machines, the desktop has the Chromium Edge, the Surface does not have it yet. Both are kept updated.
Many machines at work still have Edge due to IT policies on them.

Hi there,
It looks like this has actually been reported to our developers already, but as Microsoft is ending support for Edge Legacy (how they’re now officially referring to EdgeHTML) in a few months, 9 March 2021 to be precise, this issue won’t be fixed on our end.
That said, you should still be able to log in using the page at https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?no-calypso – that’s the old WordPress.com login page that still exists, and it works for me in EdgeHTML 18 via Browserstack. That will hopefully work for you until all your machines have been updated to the Chromium version of Edge.

Hi @kokkieh
I do not think this will workout. The older page still redirects to wordpress.com eventually (after login) and that page is still broken on EdgeHTML.
Errors are:
SCRIPT1005: SCRIPT1005: Expected '(' root.3c04d73484aa5cfa19fb.min.js (1,689) 0: Object doesn't support property or method 'AppBoot' wordpress.com (37,28961)Additionally some internal tools, use a web view component for OAuth login. Those views load in EdgeHTML again, so those are broken too!
Till the browser is pushed to all machines, it would be difficult.
An alternate solution could be a page for EdgeHTML users to install Edge Chromium instead of the broken landing page?

Thanks for the details.
Just to note that, if you’re not able to update the browser, there’s also the possibility to use our desktop app: https://apps.wordpress.com/desktop/.
