Login Info Different on .org and .com?
-
Hi there, I’m very new to all of this so excuse me if this a dumb question but I was emailed a username and password by a colleague to check out their work and their site. The colleague is able to login but I cannot. I do not know if they’re using .org or .com but I was wondering if the username and password works on both versions. Thanks!

Hi Mcpresume,
^_^ No worries, with being new to WordPress, it’s completely understandable.
:) Okay, so usernames and passwords for logins should work regardless of the website being on WordPress.com vs WordPress.org.
If you were using the same login information at the same time, there is a possibility that a security plug-in on the website prevents users with different IP address to log in with the same username. If you are not using the same login information, the error is being triggered by another issue because correct usernames and passwords should work regardless of where they are hosted.

Hmm, you know what else could be the issue… if you have had too many failed logins, WordPress could lock you out of the website for a certain time frame. Have you tried to log in several times?
Also, are you and your colleague using different login credentials?

We are using different login credentials but she was successful logging in with the user credentials she created for me. I had received the message for logging in too many times last night but today it’s just saying incorrect password. Thanks for all the help so far!

^_^ I have one more quick question. Are you copying and pasting the password she has given you into the password form, or are you re-typing it in?
I ask this because sometimes when copying and pasting passwords, extra spaces could be added by accident when copying the password. Sometimes, depending on how a WordPress site is coded, spaces could be allowed for in the coding… causing the website to view extra spaces in the password as intentional. If that is the case, it would be best to try typing it in manually if you haven’t already done so.

Howdy!
Thanks for clarifying.
http://bthayerassociates.com/new-site/ is a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site. It’s not hosted here on WordPress.com.
You should ideally be able to login at http://bthayerassociates.com/new-site/wp-login.php and if you are unsure about the password for your login, you can use the password reset option available on the same screen.
Okay, so usernames and passwords for logins should work regardless of the website being on WordPress.com vs WordPress.org.
jubyli, I would like to clarify something for you. Login credentials are not necessarily the same for the site being on WordPress.com vs WordPress.org.
In this case, the OP’s site is a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site. This means, it’s a WordPress software running on its own instance – on GoDaddy.
It’s not linked to WordPress.com (via Jetpack)
WordPress.com logins are completely different from WordPress.org logins.
A website owner can enable login for WordPress.org sites using WordPress.com account though, and in that case, using WordPress.com login credentials or WordPress.org account login credentials will work.

Hi Strikebuys,
Perhaps I misunderstood his question, but I thought he was saying that he didn’t know if the website was hosted on .com or .org…so he didn’t know where which forum to post this question. If the domain was originally on .com, then they moved the same domain to .org… I could see that there could be a credentials issue, but he didn’t seem to state that.
I know that wordpress.com and wordpress.org are completely different… .org being self-hosted.
LOL, now I’m confused. :D

Hmm, just to clarify for the sake of troubleshooting…. I still don’t think that where the website is hosted would make a difference on whether his username and password would work.
Such as, if he tries to log in on the exact website he was given by his colleague… shouldn’t that username and password work? The hosting of his colleague’s particular website doesn’t seem like it would change the usability of the username and password that she gave him for use on that particular website. It seems like something else is the problem, not the hosting.

Hi All! Sorry for the late replies, I’ve been out of the country the past week. I’ve had success! It seems my colleague had copied and pasted the password and emailed it to me, but had missed one character! All good now! Thanks everyone!
