Login interface

I don’t know if many users login this way, but I usually login by keying in username.wordpress.com/wp-login.php and then providing my information. I was wondering if it was really necessary in this instance to ask for my username again. Wouldn’t it be easier if I only had to type my password, and upon authetication, I were taken to my dashboard directly? Just a thought to ponder along the lines of improving usability of web services …

That’s actually something that you do on your browser side…

chilledsteam, semantic is a new usable today. welcome to the state-of-the-art web2.0 world fo-cussed on aesthetics and usability.

but seriously, it’s a bit more secure approach, though I can’t really understand why the logout procedure clears cookie which contains ‘login_name’ disregarding ‘Remember me’ (foreva) checkbox state — well, it must be bearing completely another semantic value.

my guess it’s done this way on purpose in the multi-user version — public service…

so, as already suggested, either you’ve got to rely on client side tools which auto-fill login/password pair (most browsers do), although that’s on my mind even less secure than having last username remembered in case someone will have a physical access to your terminal, or try to send a ‘Feedback’ with your idea.

service usability is a client’s doing. quite often.

I agree with both your responses that suggest a client side approach keeping security in mind. My point was, if I type http://chilledsteam.wordpress.com/wp-login.php, I would rather just enter my password than enter my username and my password. I fail to see the security risk in this instance.

I fail to see it either — it’s absobloodylutely obvious that your login username would be ‘chilledsteam’ in this case.

the main suggestion of mine was to send a feedback; personally I (in general case) wouldn’t suggest to use a client to store a credentials on HDD which are quite possibly could be stolen by malware.

your point is quite clear, mine is probably not — are you agree with that nonsense I stated in the last paragraph of my prev. post? *smile*

Matt blogged about OpenID a short while ago. This may be coming up although the link he provided is for a plug in thats out of date for the current WordPress version we all run.

oh, thanks, drmike. I happened to see this post almost right after it’s been published, even tried to leave a comment with a link to the more new working plugin…

doubt, it’d be incorporated in the wpcom core soon — devs gotta be quite busy now with preparing of upcoming paid services — sure, not a piece of cake.
