Login Nightmare
-
Hi there,
Unfortunately, I have a serious situation. I am trying to recover my WordPress account and I am at a loss. The last time I published on the site was in October 2013. I don’t ever remember signing up for two factor authentication and since then, I have moved countries, changed phone and phone number multiple times and have absolutely no way of logging in.
When I visit the “recover account” page, it asks for one of three things to show account ownership and I am unable to provide any.
I have no transaction ID as I have never purchased a plan through WordPress. I have no activation URL or key as I have emptied my @me Apple email multiple times to free up space. I have no Two Factor Authentication codes due to the reason above.
I think I’m able to prove I have ownership because I am able to receive “reset password” emails with links included to my email, so maybe this will suffice.
I am at a loss. I really hope someone can help!
Many thanks in advance,
Zulu -
You don’t say but I’m guessing your site is https://zuluirminger.wordpress.com/ which has the account/username zuluirminger . Have you tried leaving a comment on your own site to see if that shows up in an email address you can access. If it did then it will be a simple matter to reset the password. If the email address associated with the site hasn’t ever been updated to one you currently use, and you can’t dredge the password for the site from your memory then I think you’ll be out of luck.
-
That’s correct, it is the username zuluirminger.
Although I haven’t tried leaving a comment on my own page, I have reset my password and, although the site allows me to do that, when I try to log in with my new password it still asks for two factor authentication, which I cannot do.
The reason I need to get into my account is to delete the page.
I can’t believe that there would be a situation whereby I would not be able to remove my own writing from a website just because of a technicality…?
-
It sounds like you must have set up two step authentication previously then. I’ve always thought that was a step too far considering how often people change phones these days. You are not alone I’m afraid. There must be many thousands of WordPress.com sites sitting there undeleted simply because people didn’t write their passwords down.
-
That is mind-boggling. As you say, I’m sure I set up two factor authentication, but I cannot get my head around the fact that there is currently no way to do the simplest thing like contact WP by phone. Is there even a way to send a general query message to them as a free user? I can find nothing. Very, very annoying!

You can add the word modlook to the tag box on the right. That will alert a member of staff to reply here in due course. But I don’t think they will have any better news than I can supply. To access your account at the power company, the bank….and even at WordPress.com…. you have to use a valid password which needs to be kept safe for future use.
-
Thank you for the suggestion – I have added the tag. I hope someone can get back to me soon!

Hi @zuluirminger121017, I checked your account and see that the Two-Step Authentication is deactivated. Did you get this resolved?
-
Hi @thesacredpath , firstly I’m so sorry for the delay in reply, I wasn’t notified by email as I was for the other messages.
My page is at https://zuluirminger.wordpress.com/ and it is still live! I am pretty sure I have two-step authentication activated as it asks me to use the authenticator app whenever I try and log in.
Again, sorry for the (long) delay, but if there’s any resolution in sight I’d be most grateful.
All the best,
Zulu -
Hi Zulu –
There’s some confusion here.
You are signed in to the zuluirminger121017 account and using that to post here.
But the site you are working on is owned by zuluirminger. Are you able to sign in to that account at all? This the account you are having the 2 factor issue on?
-
Apologies for the confusion.
You are correct – I am not able to sign into WordPress using my zuluirminger account because it is locked with 2-factor authentication. That is the account I wish to delete.
When I discovered this forum, I just auto-created an account using the Google login tool and the username zuluirminger121017 was auto-assigned I guess!
Thanks

Hi there,
Do you have access to the email address associated with the zuluirminger account? If you do, then use that email in the Account Recovery form and we’ll try and help you access your account.
-
Hi @fstat , thanks for your reply.
I am able to access that email address, yes. However, I’ll post what I did in my initial post:
“I have no transaction ID as I have never purchased a plan through WordPress. I have no activation URL or key as I have emptied my @me Apple email multiple times to free up space. I have no Two Factor Authentication codes due to the reason above. [changing phones etc.]”
Because I have none of the three things required, I can’t even submit that form.
As I mentioned above, I am able to get password reset emails to my email address, but I’m not sure if that would suffice as an account ownership…
Let me know your thoughts :)
Thanks,
Zulu -
Hi Zulu –
Using the email address that is connected to your zuluirminger account, send an email to [email protected].
When you get the password reset email for the zuluirminger account what happens? They just aren’t working? Try using a different browser to see if you have better luck.

Hi @lizkarkosi ,
I will send an email to that address now.
I have just changed my password using the password reset function. I can successfully change my password, but then it still asks for my authenticator codes. THAT is the issue. I know my password etc. but I don’t have the codes for the second part of the two-factor authentication…
Thanks,
Zulu -

Got it. Thanks for hanging with me and spelling it all out again so I could make sure I understood where you were running in to trouble. Watch for our reply via email.
