Long after-the-journey narrative: pages or posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am just cranking up a blog–inspired by a recent trip to Burma. The narrative is after-the-fact, so will not change once it is written and edited. Hence it is static. I started off just writing posts w/o worrying about chronology, so the flow is choppy.

In this case–where writing after the fact from notes and memory–does it not make more sense just to do a long narrative as pages rather than posts? If I do decide to keep the category as a series of posts, can I rearrange them so they make sense (rather than be bound by the date they were written?).

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can change the publishing date of any post, so you can rearrange them easily that way. See here:

Posts. We had this conversation once already, remember?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes–that it can be done either way is not the question–another responder answered the other part of the question–describing how posts can be re-arranged after writing to respect the actual chronology of the journey.

I get the advantage of posts vs. pages–on the other hand, I am thinking about this in terms of serialization in one sense. Still playing around with the medium.

As you can see, I did figure out how to reset the images etc. Slowly slowly….

    Thanks again,

There is no advantage when it comes to choosing to create a static Page rather than a Post so let’s be clear on that because it’s not a matter that’s open to debate. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/05/12/better-blogging-at-wordpress-com-pages-and-posts/

There is no advantage to creating a static front page and compelling returning readers who come to read your most recent post to trawl through posts to find it.

Blogs are essentially a reverse chronological order publishing tool wherein the most recent published post will display on top. You cannot change this order on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. It’s designed to serve your visitors as they come to read the most recent posts and will not be inclined to trawl through hundreds of posts to locate it.

See here for the option of creating a book-like structure > http://en.support.wordpress.com/write-a-book/ Perhaps that will work for you.

Or you could use a single sticky post as an index page > http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-posts

Or you can falsify every date-stamp before publishing.

    Thank you timethief. Makes sense.

I just reread the post from the onecoolsite page re “Sticky Posts.”

I spent about an hour and could find nothing that would allow me to modify a published page and nothing that looked anything like the settings described to create a sticky post.
Tomorrow I will probably pay the $99 so I can get direct email support from the Happiness Engineers.
Something else is going on. I am posting in Safari but looked in Firefox.
I am totally frustrated. Problems persist with tagging images, creating a book structure etc. If this does not improve I will have to let go of the blog entirely as it is consuming vast amounts of time with virtually no visible result. I genuinely appreciate the efforts to help.

Well, narrow it down and familiarize yourself with the Support documents.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/ Sticky Posts explained.

We told you the structure you had in mind would be terribly difficult. Far, far easier to create Posts, tag or categorize them accurately, and let them organize themselves. Think how much time you would save.

You don’t tag images. You tag Posts.

I did switch to the Book Lite theme following raincaster’s suggestion.
I would like to caption the featured image on each post and provide a smooth narrative that reflects now my time in Myanmar unfolded.

Featured Images don’t show captions. Regular images do. There are some themes like Inuit Types where you can have a Featured Image which shows only on the front page, not in the post, which gives you the opportunity to insert the image again as a regular image and caption it.

Otherwise, use the title as the “caption”.

Thanks raincoaster. I will explore some of the other themes. I like the appearance of Book Lite but it lacks that flexibility.

    Hi raincoaster:

I’m intrigued by the idea that by tagging and or categorizing
posts I could let them self-organize.

I am not sure what you mean by “self-organize”—are you simply saying that by letting them function in reverse chronological order as they naturally do but just label them “Introduction,” “Chapter 1 (or whatever),” “Chapter 2” etc. so the reader could scroll down and start at the beginning? I just want to make sure I understand what you mean by “self-organize.”

    Thanks.
