long strange URLs
-
Hi,
When I copy urls to pages on my blog I get a long list of characters with % and numbers and letters.
It’s very cumbersome to paste them in emails and other places. Is this a WP issues? and is there anything I can do to change that?
Thanks
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When WordPress.com displays your URL, the Arabic characters are preserved. However, when you copy the address from a browser window, the clipboard converts them into ASCII characters.
There really isn’t a way around that, because it’s a browser issue rather than a website one, and it will happen with any website with Arabic or other non-Latin characters in the URL. While sometimes the ASCII link will work, such as if you paste it into a new browser window, they can cause havoc if the place you try to paste them can’t parse the ASCII code (as you discovered when trying to post in these forums).
This website explains the reasoning behind the URL changing a bit:
http://istizada.com/understanding-arabic-url-uri-structure-encoding-for-arabic-sites/For your site, there is a workaround. If you go to the Dashboard Editor, you can grab a shortlink, such as http://wp.me/p3n8TO-ck , which will allow you to paste the link elsewhere.

Thanks jackiedana,
FYI: when I copy the url and paste in in Bing Fetch I get this:
http://tipsinarabic.wordpress.com/فوائد-المكسرات/فوائد-البقوليات/فوائد-صحية-للعدسWhen I copy it anywhere else (incl. Google Fetch), I get that long string of characters.
Somehow Bing seems to translate the characters into their Arabic original.
Best,
Stewart

Ah!
I just visited the link for istizada.com. I see now what is going on.
Bummer!
I’ll stick to the shortlink button then.
Thanks again.

I’m surprised Google doesn’t handle the URL properly. At any rate, hopefully the shortlink will work for that.
