Looking for Feedback

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi I have a few questions!

My director is overseas but says that from his browser our website is showing many glitches including “white lines running through the pictures on the web pages”

Now from my end, on my high speed processor Mac book with perfect internet, I cannot see any issues from my broswer (chrome & safari)

I was looking for any feedback you can give me. I’d like to know what my site is looking like from other browsers/users. Any issues? I cannot tell!

    Domain: http://www.connectiontours.ca

Let me know what you think, Im also looking for the best place to ask in a forum within the community for extra feedback, (I’m a first time blogger! First time doing anything on the internet actually! All the feedback you can provide for me is much encouraged!!)

    Thanks again!

    Sam

You are posting in forums dedicated to the WordPress.com platform.
Are you aware that there are different versions of WordPress?
Take a look at some details about the differences:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Your site seems to be using a self installed version, WordPress.ORG and our solutions here won’t apply to your platform.

    Check out http://wordpress.org/support/
You’ll probably need to set up a new account / password to post in those forums.

    Hi!

Would I be able to speak about my issues there? It was self installed but it is not a self hosted site. I created it through wordpress.com and it is hosted by Hostgator.

Is WordPress.org still the place for me?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes it is. We are not using the same software, despite the similarity in name. We cannot help you.

“Self-hosted” means you went out and found hosting for it, not that you personally own the server. There are two kinds of WordPress: Self-hosted, ie WordPress.org, and hosted at WordPress.com. THe software differs substantially.

    …it is hosted by Hostgator.

Yes, WordPress.org is the place for you.

Looking at your page source I see this line:
    <meta name=”generator” content=”WordPress 3.9.2″ />
WordPress.com does not have versions. “3.9.2” indicates which version of WordPress.org software you are using. You must be paying someone to host your site.

It looks like you are hosted by hostgator.

You may have to sign up for a password with them, unless you already have one, in order to post in their forums. It won’t necessarily be the one you used to sign in to these wp.com forums.

Yes I do use a hosting service. Is this generally frowned upon? Does it differ greatly from if my site was self hosted?

Okay! I already have a WordPress.org login this is not an issue.

    thank you for your help!

It is not frowned upon; it is the norm.

Using a hosting service is the same thing as self-hosted.

  • Unknown's avatar

Wow, I did not know that. In your opinion, is it better to self host on your own server? Does this help with traffic flow, load time etc?

Apologies, I did not know how different the two would be.

  • Unknown's avatar

They are simply different platforms. One is not necessarily better than the other: it depends on what your goals are.

    Details here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

It means your problem, question, concern is not anything we can address in this forum. Our software is different so our answers won’t apply to your platform.

Right on, thank you for your help, you can tell Im still learning!

    Thanks again,

    Samantha
