Looking for TRUE "One-Column" Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

Hey hey. I can’t seem to have any luck in searching for a good theme that fits what I want.

I will list what I’m looking for in order of preference
    1. TRUE One-column, I.E. no side bar, no anything on the side of anything, even no post data on the side of the post.
    2. I don’t want links/menu at the top that go to the different pages.
    3. I want a dark theme.

So, compare the front page of my blog http://metaledu.wordpress.com (as you can see, even though I took out all widgets and put a blank text widget there, the side-bar is still there (and you can’t turn it off with this theme)) with an actual post page http://metaledu.wordpress.com/2011/05/28/terminology/ (notice there is TRULY only ONE column).

Now, I see the new Tweny Eleven Theme can be set up to be dark, and to have a layout like what I am looking for, except it still has the page navigation menu at the top. Does anyone know if, when using this theme, you can turn those off? Also, I tried using it and, well, it’s so NOT wide enough, or as wide as what the preview shows for the one-column selection. It too has a header that is TOO tall for me too. Also, if you look at my page now, the text of it looks fine, but on that Twenty Eleven theme, it looks like crap and is WAY too big and weirdly spaced and the font is just terrible.

See, the only 1-column themes I found had these, huge header areas, which you couldn’t edit (you could put in a new picture but, you’d still have a 50,000 pixel tall header -_-‘).

It seems like I’m going to have to get the custom CSS upgrade. I am already paying $20/year for the 5 GB storage, now I have to pay another $30? Would it be cheaper just to get WordPress.org software and host my own blog at this point?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Also one other thing, if I DID purchase the custom CSS upgrade (since apparently the cost of web hosting went up by 10 billion percent since I last hosted a website), would I be able to, in fact, edit the custom CSS so that my front page doesn’t display the side-bar?

WordPress.com wasn’t exactly clear on what it can do other than, custom fonts and colours, which if that’s all it can do, $30 is WAY too much for that.

No, just so you don’t understand, I’m not asking if it can EDIT the CORE stylesheet of the theme I am using, but add to it only on my blog where it hides the things I want hidden and alters it, etc, you know, in the same way that you can use it to change the font colours.

I’m sorry but I do not help with CSS editing. Staff now provide support for the custom design upgrade. They can answer your questions and the Volunteers who help with CSS can answer them as well. I will flag this thread so it gets Staff attention.

    1, 2. Elegant Grunge
    1, 2, 3. Fusion
    1, 2, 3. iNove
    2, 3*. Modularity Lite
    2, 3. Mystique
    1, 2, 3. P2
    1, 2, 3. Pilcrow

1 = header area too big
2 = has menu bar for pages (I don’t want that)
    3 = colour scheme/font scheme I hate
    * next to number means I could tolerate this problem if it had no other problems or there were no better alternatives.

See, this is what I mean, almost ALL of them have a header area that’s way too big for my tastes, then every single one actually has the menu bar for pages (which I said I didn’t want), and none of them had colour options that I could live with. Some of those I had already found.

Also did you go to http://theme.wordpress.com and use the filter feature to filter by “one-column?”

As far as the menu goes, you can make that disappear easily by creating a custom menu and putting nothing in it and then assign that custom menu to the top navigation location.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, when I used the filter and the ONLY filter I applied was “one-column,” it only returned 2 results, even though there are more than just those two.

And, making the menu disappear will only work if the theme supports creating custom menus.

Besides, even with getting rid of the menu, none of the themes that I could find or were suggested so far were anything near what I was looking for.

Does it help if you guys know this blog I am looking for this for is supposed to be a book?

All themes here at wordpress.COM, with top navigation support custom menus with the exception of monotone, the photo theme.

Sidebars on any theme can be hidden via CSS. In some themes it is quite easy, but in others you end up having to change and adjust a whole bunch of things so that the site displays correctly.

If you are reasonably proficient with CSS, you might even want to think about starting with Toolbox or Sandbox since they are wide open blank canvases.

    @TSP
Thanks for responding to this thread. I’ll remove the flagging now.

G’day TT and you are welcome.

I’m highly skilled in CSS, I just wanted to make sure I could use custom CSS to do things like hide the sidebar and such if I purchased it.

With that, it’s no problem, because I actually really like my theme I have now (except the header being 9000000 pixels tall, but CSS will take care of that too). ;)

Thanks, I guess I’m going to go with buying the CSS upgrade.

I’d like to share a couple of important points. CSS is themes specific at WordPress.com. When you alter a theme’s stylesheet, you only need to put in the Editor the modification/additions to the CSS, not the entire thing. Read this for more info:

    Happy blogging. :)

The only dark and one-column theme I can remember is Vertigo. It looks very simple and creepy. :) http://vertigodemo.wordpress.com/
