Looking for WordPress Personal Help

  • Unknown's avatar

I’d like some personal help on revising my blog so that it has more white space and is clearer and bolder, like other blogs I see of people in my industry I follow. I initially started with one theme but I find the type size is too small — I think it hinders people reading it. I’d also like to modify the right side of the blog with other info like a blog roll.

Is there somebody that can work with me or can you recommend a WordPress pro that could help me. Constant Contact offers personal help online through chat and it made a world of difference.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

A staff member may come across this thread and help. Until then, you can change the theme. I do not think the themes are editable on WordPress.com, but I can check.

Yes, themes are editable! In this link, you can edit the theme style sheet by clicking on ‘Theme CSS.’

Thankyou Markethea. I checked the link and it does appear I can make changes using CSS style sheets. I’m not familiar with this and it looks like there is a learning curve. (I always worry how many hours will I sink into a technology this time and will I get to the point that I can then use it to do what I want — only so many hours in the day :-)

It does have a link to an overview video of CSS so maybe that can speed things up.

    1) You can’t change the styling of the theme without the Custom Design upgrade. As makethea said, you can simply switch to a different theme. You can see all themes in action here:
    http://theme.wordpress.com/

    2) The main font size varies from theme to theme. If you’d like to use a theme with a bigger font size, see this post of mine:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/12/07/main-text-font-size-compared/
But note that the newest themes aren’t included in the list (see the red note in my sidebar).

    3) To add a blogroll, you create the links in Links > Add New, then you add a Links widget in Appearance > Widget.

Thanks Justpi, I came across this theme from your list that is much closer to what I’m looking for: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/hustle-express/. It seems much more open with white space and I can add elements to break up the copy, too. And the right sidebar seems more open, too.

Will I be able to transition my older blogs over to this theme simply or will I have to re-input them? I’ve only done 2 blogs so far so that wouldn’t be the worst thing.

    It’s easy to change themes:
dashboard—>appearance—>themes—>select your theme—>you can preview, then if you like what you see activate

You may have to move widgets from the inactive module back into your sidebar, but maybe not.

    Hi,
Thanks everybody for your great comments and help. I am now trying the new theme from Able, which is a big improvement over the earlier theme. However, there are 2 things i’d like:

    1. Add social media buttons in my sidebar or at the top that allow people to follow me on Twitter

    2. Create a home page that only shows the first paragraph of each blog and requires a person to click on the title to go to the entire blog. Currently the home page lists ALL of every blog

    Thankyou, David

    You’re welcome.

    1) You add these yourself, using image widgets or code in a Text widget.
    2) Some themes do this automatically, but in most themes you have to use the read-more tag:
