Looking to auto-fill username and password for Password Protected site?

    Hi all,

We have built a Help Site for our users but are seeing users not using the Help Site due to the username and password barrier. We want the Help Site protected as we don’t want anyone to be able to look into our product and product features. However, are looking to make the barrier easier for our users.

We have a common username and password for users and were wondering if we could make this username and password pre-fill for users that login to a specified URL. So that are users can simply go to the site, hit enter and be able to use the sites and walk-throughs.

Let us know if there are any solutions you think could help.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Even though your site is password protected, please confirm that your site is hosted by/on WordPress.com (yoursite.wordpress.com) so we can make sure you are posting in the right forum. We have quite a number of people who have self-hosted blogs who mistakenly post here. See here in case you are not aware of the differences. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Having said that, regardless of where you are hosted, I’m sure you are aware that by sharing a common username and password, any one of your users can change the email and password associated with that account at any time. Better they each have their own account.

    Hi Jennifer,

Our website is a WordPress.com hosted site that is mapped to our own domain.

As far as our users, we’ve set up an account that is read only so that they won’t be able to get into the dashboard to change anything in terms of content. Good point on them being able to change the password though.

We need to look into that. The one problem is that to get each of them their own account would probably result in them not using the site at all, which would be unfortunate.

    I appreciate the response.

    Thanks,

    Chris

As far as I am aware, there is no “read only” account. I suggest that you log in with that shared username and password and see exactly what you have access to behind the scenes. At the bare minimum, if that username has been assigned only as a “contributor” role, they can still change the log in information of that user profile under “My Account>Edit My Profile” from the gray admin bar.

To make a long story short, the safest path would be to have each user have their own WP.com account. (You can have 35 users at no cost.) Then when they log in, they can leave the box checked to remain logged in. That will be fine until the next time they clear their browsers cache/cookies.
