Looking to Migrate Podcast to my Website
-
Hello,
I have a podcast whose hosting service will no longer support a Free plan. I am considering getting the Personal WordPress.com plan so I can host my podcast on my website. I have a few questions to this effect.
1) I am wondering if there is a way to transfer/migrate what I have already on the other platform onto WordPress, or if I have to recreate every single episode one by one. (I have looked at the tutorial and have not found there.)
2) From what I understand, the RSS feed will change. If I already have the podcast linked to iTunes, will that create a duplicate or merely switch the RSS feed, thus creating a new iTunes feed for my podcast and deleting the old one when I cancel my service on the hosting platform?
3) Is there a limit as to how many podcasts listeners can download/listen to per month?
4) Are there any tips for migrating my listeners aside from creating a podcast to inform them of the migration? I also have video formats on YouTube (if that helps).
Thanks in advance!

Hello there,
Many thanks for reaching out.
1) I am wondering if there is a way to transfer/migrate what I have already on the other platform onto WordPress, or if I have to recreate every single episode one by one. (I have looked at the tutorial and have not found there.)
What’s the platform the podcast is being migrated from exactly?
In WordPress, episodes come in the form of posts, which are assigned to a podcast category.
There’s more about how this is structured here: https://wordpress.com/support/audio/podcasting/
2) From what I understand, the RSS feed will change. If I already have the podcast linked to iTunes, will that create a duplicate or merely switch the RSS feed, thus creating a new iTunes feed for my podcast and deleting the old one when I cancel my service on the hosting platform?
It depends on the platform being migrated from and the links being used.
I suspect that if the domain is the same, the feed will re-populate what’s in iTunes rather than duplicate.
3) Is there a limit as to how many podcasts listeners can download/listen to per month?
There is not.
4) Are there any tips for migrating my listeners aside from creating a podcast to inform them of the migration? I also have video formats on YouTube (if that helps).
If the URL of the site is the same, these will be redirected in any case.
If the feed just re-populates, listeners would probably just seen update if any.
I guess the new website, would just need to be promoted or tweeted about to let them know and if they notice any changes.
I hope this all helps.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
Right now, the podcast is hosted on Whooshkaa.
My website has the Elegant Grunge theme and I would like to have repertoires of podcast episodes on certain pages. Is that possible?
Thanks again!

Hi there,
Yes, you can insert selected podcast episodes to various pages of your site by using the Podcast Player block:
-
Thank you! This is information is very helpful.
If I choose to host my podcast directly on my website, how do I generate the RSS feed through WordPress.com?
-
Hi there,
By default WordPress automatically creates RSS feeds of all your blog content. For example this is the RSS feed for all blog posts on your site: https://binkyproductions.wordpress.com/feed
Typically when you set up your podcast (which we cover here) you will choose what category you want your podcast to be listed under. For example, most people will choose “Podcast” as the category, and then they would submit the URL
https://mysite.wordpress.com/category/podcast/feedto Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc.Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Okay, perfect.
Can we also add more categories to our podcast, like Health, Meditation, etc, or is that something different and I should keep that for the tags only?
And btw thank you for the info.

Hi again,
Yes you can add multiple categories and tags to your podcast episodes, as many as you want. However for the post to show up in iTunes, Spotify, etc, you must include the Podcast category.
Also this would allow you to publish regular blog posts that are not a podcast episode post. All you would need to do is exclude the podcast category on that blog post.
Hope that helps!

Yes, this is very helpful. Thank you.
So just to make sure I understand correctly, to create the podcast RSS, I MUST include “Podcast” and can include “Health”. And then when I create separate posts, I can include those extra categories, but I don’t include podcast so that the post does not get sent to iTunes. Is that correct?

That is absolutely correct!
