Looking to move my website to WordPress
-
I currently have a website through Wix.com, I know that I can not actually transport my website to WordPress without restarting all over but I was wondering if it was possible to bring my current domain name with me. The domain name was not purchased through Wix.com but MyDomains.com. I have no problems rebuilding the website while the Wix one still operates normally, I’m just curious as to what’s involved and if I can keep my current domain name when I’m done rebuilding my site.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, you can use your domain here.
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.
Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium ujpgrade bundle.
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.
If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and as you own that domain already you can see here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
I am tagging this thread for a Staff follow-up to make sure you succeed.

Thank you very much for your quick response, me and my partner are understandably nervous about moving our website but we feel that Wix is the wrong location for our site and that WordPress is the better option.
So if I have this correct I will need to pay a small fee to make it happen and I can contact MyDomain.com to help with the move?
I currently have a WordPress account but its merely a free one activated to see how WordPress compared to Wix.com, this is the account I can keep until I have rebuilt my site and are ready to switch the domain name across?

Thank you, I am totally fine with that.
We just want to make it as smooth a transfer as possible because our site has begun building a fan base and we didn’t want to lose our name.
With Wix.com they use Ajax Technology to create the URL’s, this ends up making the URL’s for each page weird. Am I to assume that WordPress don’t use this same technology?
-
We do not have “weird” URLs here. I think it’s best if you read this comparison though as WordPress.ORG blogging may better suit your needs > https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

This is an example of a wix url from our website http://www.pressa2join.com/#!final-fantasy-type-0-review/c1l9w
I just want clean URL’s that are found in google searches.
I rushed into a decision when choosing Wix and really regretted it when the site went live, I really like the layout and look of some WordPress websites and are convinced it is the better option for helping to make our website better and help it grow.

Im no expert on URL’s but your’s look a lot better than some of the ones we have had to deal with.
Is there an achieve system with WordPress, to help us keep track of old news?. There isn’t one on Wix and it makes life extremely difficult having to organise our news feed to make sure nothing goes missing.

Yes. All support docs are found here http://support.wordpress.com
Whenever we publish a post the software automatically archives for us. We can display the Archives in a text widget.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/ We can always access all posts at Dashboard > Posts > All Posts and Pages at > Dashboard > pages > All Pages -
Excellent, that’s music to my ears!.
So in your opinion what are the stand out features of having a WordPress site? say compared to other sites
-
I don’t know that this is a comparison exactly, but one of the benefits of WordPress.com is you can start building your site using the free plan that you already have and see how you like it. Then you can map your domain to the site later if it works the way you want. We also have a get started guide at the link below that should be helpful
