If you are looking to apply the Motion theme on your brand new WordPress.com site, you are correct that it will not be available for you to use. It is only available to sites that were opened prior to the theme being retired.

If you want to buy someone’s site using that theme, you’ll have to contact them directly either through an open comment box or a contact form on that site. Neither we nor Staff can do anything to help you contact the site owner. You can find sites using the Motion theme by searching for the theme’s footer credits in Google.

Just be aware that retired themes may not be updated with the latest features.

To be honest, even though I believe it is possible, I am not entirely sure that if a site owner agrees to transfer ownership of an existing site to you that you will be able to use the retired theme. So, as someone else has tagged this for Staff assistance, I am asking Staff for confirmation.

    thanks.
lots and lots of blogs live with this theme.

if you would get it back up in the theme options for a couple of days then much appreciated

  • @weareswiss

I am going to send you an email to your WordPress.com registered address. Let me know if you do not get it.

Hey Josh, could you please answer my above question?

I’ll restate it here so that it is a bit clearer: if a site owner agrees to transfer ownership of an existing site using a retired theme, will the new owner of the transferred site be able to use the retired theme?

    Thanks!

Thanks, Mark, but my question is still not entirely answered.

nicewaves is an account that is 10 months old and the Motion theme was retired after that. This means that nicewaves can still use that theme if that account had a website prior to the theme being retired.

weareswiss is an account that is 2 days old and technically would not be able to use the Motion theme, since the account was created after the theme was retired.

So, again, thanks for your replies, but I still would appreciate receiving a reply from Staff to my above question. :)

  • justjennifer,

In theory that should work. As the ability to use retired themes is not user based, but blog based.

  • Unknown's avatar

I guess that would explain one of my blogs as having 330 themes available

@auxclass-exactly right and what I pointed out here.

So, in order to use a retired theme, the site had to be created prior to the theme being retired and fortunately, this includes older sites that are transferred to new ownership. Got it.
