Looks like our favicon issue is solved, or is it?
-
Hello
Sorry if this has been commented already but it looks to me as if what is described here:
http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2008/12/02/go-get-a-blavatar/ solves our problem.
I have tried to upload an “.ico” file, that didnt work (silly me hadnt read the “jpg or png only” at the beginning); but the favicon I got from the cropped jpg is a decent one, although Im sure I could do better by chossing something with less colour or detail.
What do you think of the feature?
Can we close all the threads requesting favicons and stop harassing the staff about it now?
Hoooray! -
I don’t think it works on pre-existing avatars, either. I’ve got one…it’s a perfectly lovely avatar, and it looks fine as a favicon, but it’s not showing up here. I also can’t get the video to play for me (it says it requires me to upgrade to Flash 10, coincidentally the version of Flash that breaks the Flash uploader, so I don’t think I really want to do that). Does it say somewhere on the video that you have to re-upload your image?
-
And I’m gonna request that staff move this into the main Support forum. They might as well. There are going to be a LOT of these threads very soon if there isn’t one there to build on.

The avatar and the favicon are two different things. One doesn’t affect the other. You upload the favicon under “Settings” (general). You upload your avitar under “Users” (your profile). They can be the same image, or not, as you like. The format must be jpeg or png.
You crop the favicon after you upload it.That’s odd that you couldn’t play the video. I don’t have Flash 10 either, but it worked for me.

Hi Rain,
Actually, I accidentally upgraded to Flash 10. It turns out that the browser upload works just as well as the WP flash upload. The only thing you miss is that “progress bar” thingee. Other than that, it ends up working just fine!
-
Ah, thanks, both of you. Now I can upgrade in peace. I think the last owner drank the Quicktime koolaid or something, it doesn’t have Flash at all, which is weird because it has every single Adobe program you have to pay for.
-
Okay, that is one FUSSY cropping tool. Every time I get my cursor near it the darn thing collapses entirely. Anyone got any tips?
-
@1tess, your point that the favicon is different from the avatar you already have is a vital one.
Your blavatar functions as a favicon for your blog, among other things. Your avatar is a picture representing you. Since you can have multiple wordpress.com blogs, the two things have to be different.
For a more detailed account of the differences, see:

Yes, the name ‘blavatar’ strikes me as a particularly confusing one since it isn’t an avatar and doesn’t replace the avatar. Where else does the blavatar come up apart from the favicon?
-
Agreed.
Ah, and I note it’ll show up on pings. Clever, because of course pings come from blogs, not directly from users.
-
I assumed “blavatar”= “avatar for use on your blog”
But actually “blavatar”=”avatar OF your blog”Does that make sense?
-
How long does it take to show up? And it shows up regardless of domain mapping and custom CSS, right? RIGHT?

It JUST appeared now. I swear, I thought you guys were combining on a practical joke to drive me insane. Thanks, but I can walk there from here!

I’ve changed my “blavatar” (rubbish neologism) from a bit of Melancholia I to a new home-made yellow image, but still get the first image I uploaded in my Firefox tabs, Opera browser and Safari, too.
Could anyone please tell me why that is?
Thanks.

Have you cleared your cache and cookies? It does seem to take a little time to work through the system (see raincoaster’s posts above). Without a link to your blog, we can’t tell you whether it’s visible to others or not.
